Is a university education still worth the time and money?
Maybe it's time to do some calculations: pay their way through three or four years of higher education for uncertain returns – or take their chances without a degree.

It's no longer the case that a degree will guarantee a good job. Not only have the financial burdens left many facing an uncertain future, but the education system itself is believed to be useless by families who point out that it does not reward merit in this increasing competitive and still lousy job market.

Some even say that investing in college education is doomed to fail. Today, even peddlers who collect garbage…make more money than many graduates. According to China’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, a record 6.99 million graduates swamped the job market in 2013, while there are 15% fewer positions available than one year ago.

Indeed, what you learned in college is separate from the real world, and you could learn much more than that out in society. Most graduates today earn only thousands of RMB a month, and they are unable to afford houses, cars, and even marriage without parents’ financial support. But for those who spend four years sharpening their abilities in society, they usually live a better life, though they don’t have a degree. From this perspective, it’s not worth investing so much time and money in college.

But still, education is still quite revered in today's China due to its long-lasting tradition. But this emphasis on education ignored the fact that China’s developing economy could not create a commensurate number of job positions. Millions of graduates had to enter society with high expectations, but limited opportunities.

Maybe it's time to think over the question “whether higher education is worth it”. What do you think?
