In China, we normally just give red packets with money inside to the wedding couple.  It is a tradition to simply give money as gifts in major events, such as a wedding or a funeral. And the amount is based on how close your relationship is. I'm wondering what's the wedding custom in your country, gifts or cash? If it is ok to give cash as the wedding gift, how much do you give the couple?

Giving cash at a wedding in UK or Australia may well be seen as an insult, suggesting that the couple who are being wed are not worth the time or effort of thinking of a suitable gift, buying it and wrapping/presenting it in a thoughtful manner.

Often one of the bridal party (Matron of Honour or senior bridesmaid), usually has a list of desired items from the bride & groom, and they will advise of what might be appropriate or desired by the couple.

If in doubt, perhaps contact the bride's family to ask if gift or money is appropriate.

In China, we don't think asking is a good choice, because the persons will consider that  as a begging.

In the States there is the Engagement party, a gift or cash is expected.
Then there is the Bridal Shower, most couples register at a Department store things they want or need or specific patterns or colors they prefer and the gift is wrapped and presented at the Shower.
For the wedding most people give a cash gift, some provide a gift instead.
I'm just here for the money

Most of them simply  mooch off each other as freeloaders, thanks to patronage and paternalism.  And  I'd argue it would be wise to give them books to get educated first. Money is not everything.
