A shootout left two people dead and one seriously injured in Phoenix Monday afternoon, police said.

The shooting led to the death of a Phoenix police officer at the hospital and a man wanted on a felony warrant on the scene, Police Chief Daniel Garcia said.

The incident occurred when the suspect fled in a car which caused a collision involving three vehicles. He then ran away and started an exchange of gunfire with officers outside a check cashing and title loan business.

The culprit came around a corner holding a gun and a third officer shot him dead, according to Detective James Holmes.
"It was obvious that the guy was out of control," said Wayne Monton, who owns a business nearby and witnessed the shooting. "After the crash and the shooting, everybody just took off running. It was chaos."

Nick Cusson, the manager of a restaurant in a nearby shopping center said he heard several gunshots just a few minutes after arriving at work.

"The next thing you know, the whole parking lot is scattered with people," Cusson said. "Then within about 30 seconds, we see all these cops driving up."

Shooting incidents are pervasive in the United States and many critics blame the notoriously liberal gun control laws in the country for its high rate of gun violence.

According to an interactive project between slate.com and the anonymous creator of the Twitter feed @GunDeaths, more than 12,000 gun deaths have been were reported by the US media between the December 2012 tragic shooting in Newtown and December 31, 2013.
