The only bit I do not understand is why did it take so long to resolve

2008 was same year as the milk scandal and that took over 3 years to cleanup.  Beijing was only focused on putting on a good show for the Olympics.

he just wanted to vent his anger to the factory without knowing the outcomes of his irresponsible behavior.
to some extend, he didn't intend to cause the injuries of the Japanese, but his bahavior caused tensions between China and Japan, that is the reason why he was sentenced to life in prison.
China's food safety problem was widely criticized by the world, and the country's reputation about food safety was further tarnished, so a more severe punishment sounded reasonable, but personally i think the sentence was too heavy.

There are many ways of showing your disapproval at a factory without poisoning innocent people. He should have thought of the consequences before he acted, I am afraid he deserves what he got

the case took over 2 years to be resolved, the more time it took, the more complicated the case was, but the conclusion was too simple, just because a temporary worker's dissatisfaction to the factory.
so i think it is not logical about the whole process of the case.
