This was diplomacy in action.
The Indian Govt demanded Richard's be extradited for criminal charges presented by officials (friends) of Khobragade, because Richards ratted her out - the US refused the request.
Richard's family has been granted asylum to the US.
Khobragade is now back in India and no longer has diplomatic immunity.
The US could formally request she be extradited to face criminal charges resulting from her actions, but it is highly doubtful it would be granted or pursued at this point.
The charges will remain until she is tried in Federal Court.
As a result, in a tit-for-tat action, the Indian Govt has removed security barriers as well as restricted privileges of US Diplomats and Consular staff along with their families.
We shall see how this event will play out, I'm sure its not over.
I'm just here for the money

Now that the Indian diplomat is through the worst, and the US have been forced to bend backwards, following are the takeaways from this episode:

(1) Indian authorities need to understand that they might be able to do wrong and get away with it in India; law enforcement in other countries is not as un-vigil.

(2) Indian authorities need to understand that as a public servant watching their own conduct constantly and consistently is extremely important, because this is information age and life is no longer in the slow lane. When you do wrong you will be caught, sooner or later. When you do wrong you will be punished, sooner or later.

(3) Indian authorities need to understand that affairs internationally are not as slow as they are accustomed to back home. World moves fast, especially when it comes to international affairs.

(4) US lawmakers need to understand that whereas land of the law is important to have and apply there are things above land of the law. It's called International law.

(5) US Lawmakers need to look up, understand and understand the meaning of the word "Diplomat".

(6) US Lawmakers need to look up, understand and understand the meaning of the word "Immune".

(7) US Lawmakers need to look up, understand and understand the meaning of the word "Protocol".

(8) US Lawmakers need to understand that "Diplomacy" is by and large a reciprocal game.

(9) US diplomats need to understand that post 1/11 while posted abroad they can't enjoy similar privilege around the globe they afforded prior to that. That in a foreign country they will be dealt with the same way any local citizen would be treated. That post 1/11 they have lost their privileged status. That they have been stripped off their privileges not in only in India but throughout the whole world on a larger scale.

(10) US agents need to understand that they can't kill people abroad and find themselves on the plane back home next hour. That the whole world has just learnt a new way to deal with USA's bullying in the name of law enforcement.

It will be interesting to see the new events that unfold. I am sure expelling of a few more diplomats from each others' side is still in coming.

It sounds like that India government actually backs the trafficking practice by its diplomats.

It sounds like that India government actually backs the trafficking practice by its diplomats.

That is a naive conclusion.

By that token have you also concluded US government backs handcuffing, strip searching, cavity searching multiple times a diplomat as if she was a drug peddler? Have you also concluded US government backs interfering in the judicial proceedings of another country as US has done by flying the maid in question to US?
