David Beckham and Andy Murray will miss out on knighthoods in the New Year Honours list, despite being widely tipped to receive the honours, according to reports.
Beckham, 38, had been suggested for a knighthood in May when he announced he was retiring from football after a 20-year career.
Supporters said he should be honoured both for his sporting success and his work toward the London 2012 Olympics.
But a source told the Mail on Sunday that some officials had argued against on the grounds the star should wait longer before receiving the award.
Beckham received an OBE in 2003.
Murray, 26, had also been seen as a likely candidate for a knighthood after becoming the first Wimbledon men's singles champion for 77 years in July.
Downing Street said at the time it was a "safe bet" that it would be recommending the tennis star for a knighthood.
But the Mail reported Murray had also been snubbed because it was too soon since he was awarded an OBE in the 2013 New Year Honours list, in recognition of his Olympic gold medal and US Open triumph.
Murray received the honour from Prince William in October.
Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins, who is also known for her charity work and has performed for British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, is expected to receive an OBE, according to the Mail.
