I think the Chinese domestic auto makers (And I mean those wholly owned by Chinese, not JV's) will follow the same path that the Japanese and Koreans followed vis-a-vis their reputations for quality and reliability.

Both Japan and Korea were know for inexpensive and unreliable cars (At least the ones they exported internationally) at the beginning.  Their manufacturers learned from that and now they both produce well respected models that they sell abroad.

Unfortunately for America, our auto manufacturers became fat and lazy by the time the late 1960's came around.  They produced crap right up until the early 1980's when things finally came round.  These days, although Europeans do like to make fun of them for their design, their quality is on par with the competition.

These days though, taking an auto at face value as to where it was manufactured is tricky.  Every major brand either has factories on every continent, or imports parts and sub-assemblies from all over the globe and assembles them into the cars locally.  Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Subaru, and Toyota, to name a few, all manufacture cars here in the U.S. from parts made in the U.S.

Cheers
