For most Chinese people, English is one of the required skills to achieve further study, find a job or go abroad. People have remained very enthusiastic about English for a few dozens of years. However, during this period of time, many talented people miss working or studying opportunity simply because they are not adept in English. According to figure estimated by media, about 200 million Chinese students are paying all their effort to improve their English skills. The recent reforming of college entrance examination, gaokao, is trying to cool down the English fever and helping the language to return to its original function as a tool of communication.

Over-paid attention on English skills had always been doubted and denounced. Students spend so much time on learning English and they are starting to learn English from a very young age. Depressingly, English education under the impact of utilization has not paid-off well.

Many people practice their English skill using their leisure time. The photo taken on Jun 10, 1999 was about a vendor who learnt English when she had no customers. According a research conducted by Shanghai International Studies University, the percentage of all the foreign language learners who can conduct free cross-cultural communication using a foreign language will not exceed 5% in China.

English learners even read Learn English with US Presidents in order to follow the trend. During the recent weeks, Wang Xuming, the former spokesperson of the Ministry of Education and the chairman of Chinese Language Press, has been calling for cancelling English classes in primary school and urging more classes taught on traditional Chinese literacy. This created quite a stir on the Internet.

In the afternoon of August 14, 2006, at the door of Chongqing Bookstore, Zhang Weihan from Sichuan province were holding a blackboard in his hands and finding language pals to learn English with him. In face, many people have made little progress in English even though they have learnt it for around ten years in school. They can hardly communicate with a foreigner since they haven’t had the proper language environment.
