Chinese characters are our ancestor's valuable legacy to us. It's so rich and colorful. So we can't have the heart to lose it. We should try to inherit and develop it. Chinese characters are the important part of Chinese culture.

I find it confusing when there is pinyin as well as characters: my 'foreigner' brain is trained to recognize 'roman' writing, and pinyin does not help me when reading characters.
Also: there are comparatively few sounds in Chinese, compared to the more than 5,000 characters. So a pinyin 'shi', with its more than 30 interpretations - depending on tone and context, is unintelligible in pinyin, whereas in characters, 是 is immediately distinguishable from 市,事,十,or any other variation of that sound.
The journey IS the destination!

Do you need to type Chinese? If you don't need to type, you can forget about the pinyin and just study the Chinese characters...
