On 10th October 1964, the Tokyo Olympic Games was held as an great event of "national pride". Building a strong country and promoting position in the international community became the targets of every Japanese citizen. On the closing ceremony, the Japanese words "SAYONARA" bid farewell to everyone. Now, this “goodbye” received response after 49 years.

The Berlin Olympic Games was held in 1936, during which Tokyo successfully got the right to hold the Olympic games of 1940. In July 1938, the Japanese Olympic Committee renounced the hosting of the Olympic games under the pressure of the military. Then the war spread all over the world and the twelfth Olympic Games was canceled. This picture shows a Japanese woman with the Tokyo Olympic flags in her hands before the twelfth Olympic Games.

After the war, Japan regained the wish to hold the Olympic games. In 1954, Tokyo's bid of hosting the Olympic Games was beaten by Rome. However, Tokyo grasped the chance 4 years later and became the first Asian country that hosts the Olympic games. This photo shows that traders in Tokyo were posting the Olymic emblems from door to door on 1st June.

In 1961, the Japanese government issued the "Sports Promotion Law" and a series of relevant measures, hoping to reduce the competitive sports investment as much as possible and strengthen investment on the school sports and social sports. On 5th May 1964, a group of boys were flying a giant kite with the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games emblem printed on it.

Successful bid of hosting the Olympic games led to a social craze as Japanese people thought it was the most perfect time to reshape the national image. The investment of about 3 billion dollars created a record in history of Olympic games. The photo shows construction of venues in Tokyo in 1963.

Tokyo began the large-scale city construction such as the capital highway, the city subway, monorail and high speed railroad etc. In 1963, before the Tokyo Olympic Games eve, venues in Tokyo were under construction.
