I am a big sucker for romance.

A while back someone gave me this vow and it was for me personally one of the most beautiful vows one could make to your partner.

死生契阔,与子成说;

执子之手,与子偕老。

Whether in life or death, together or apart, if we vow we keep it forever. Once I hold your hand, only you and I will spend this life together.

For me, this embodies what a marriage should be.

I want to know, do we still value today a life long commitment?

Share some thoughts with us and even Chinese poetry that has touched your heart in some way.

多少人爱你青春欢畅的时辰,

爱慕你的美丽,假意或真心,

只有一个人爱你那朝圣者的灵魂,

爱你衰老了的脸上痛苦的皱纹!

How many loved your moments of glad grace,

And admire your beauty with love false or true,

Just one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,

Love your aging wrinkle face of pain!

Have to say the second poem really took my breath away.
Do you know whom the poet is by any chance?

I can find out from the person who gave it to me. Then I will let you know.

This is the original as it is on my friends profile

I did the translation as I wanted to know what it meant. I don`t know if it is a 100% correct, but it did speak to me as well.

I think that the Chinese has a lot to offer the world in poetry.

Of course you have poets in other countries as well. But I want to talk here only about Chinese poetry as I am discovering the Chinese people for the first time and want to learn about them and their culture.

I like that first one. I may use it as my wedding vow to my mate.

Do you happen to know who the original author is, so that I can give credit when asked?

as for the second one, I'm sure Chinese is the original, because it is very clumsy in English. (although the meaning still gets through)
