With the planets and moon a video camera and specialist software (mostly freeware) is the way to go for the amateur astronomer. It's not that expensive once you have a telescope, about 500-1000 USD for a suitable video camera (colour or monochrome), cables and so on. The main reason for using video is that you can take thousands of frames and keep only the frames that are in really good focus. Atmospheric turbulence is a real problem when photographing the planets and the Moon.
Video cameras also work very well on the brighter deep sky objects too.
