I never like to generalize but I witnessed many situations like that.
Denial, according the psychoanalysts, is one of the most primary mechanisms of defense. It consists in the attitude of denying or minimizing obvious facts of reality with which the individual can´t  cope or whose irresponsibility is unable to meet.

On my first visit to my wife's hometown we were asked, how much did I earn? How old am i? Is your (wife's wedding) ring real gold? How much did it cost? And later when I wasn't there,  does he have a big ....... ummmm was it nose ? {:soso_e123:}
