There are some villages, not very far - just beside the town.
Abandoned.
Half abandoned...
Empty.

Villagers emigrate abroad, or just go looking for a job in the city.

There is some of Their life left there. Between a lotus flowers in the ponds, in the middle of the empty houses and gardens.
It is not hard to spot it - You just need to look for an empty windows.

These are substantial buildings. It would be interesting to know the history.

These are substantial buildings. It would be interesting to know the history.

This is area between Taishan and Kaiping. From here comes a lot of the emigrants who crossed the ocean in a hope for a better life. Starting from XIX century when They were building a railways.

There are all the villages abandoned. Famous "Canadian village" near Chikan. With some impressive but abandoned villas. Villas built for the money of the emigrants.

And now, when many families decides to "unite abroad" ... there is nobody to take care about the old buildings.

Many villas are empty for decades.

There are also some other places, built by the repatriates who came back in XX century.

I'll try to visit also this kind of places - to show the other stories...

Mark Kitto described the village where he and his wife set up their cafe in Moganshan as comprisin ...

Yes, speaking about HongKong - but not about the Hong Kong island itself... I was amazed looking at the empty hills with few old buildings (some of them empty), and then at the overcrowded City.

Perhaps because of this it retains its beautiful scenery.
