Given the difference in population difference between China and USA it wouldn't be strange if China did overtake USA in terms the size of the economy. Once this catchup phase of Chinas economy has ended it might be possible that we will see a slow relative decline of China economy compared to USA again. The USA simply has a lot more room for population growth than China.

What;s wrong for being Number 2, even 3 or 4 or 10?

It's exhausting to keep being number one.

Exactly my thoughts. However I think many in China, like some in the U.S, want to be number 1, just for the sake of being number 1. China shouldn't try to be number 1 most powerful but just make its citizens have the best, most constructive life on the planet. By achieving this goal, China's soft power will finally match its hard power and it will probably end up being number 1 anyway.

soft power

The west has soft power since they can't come up with anything concrete to praise  ...

Yes I already know communists have no time for niceties, culture and the real point of life, which is what soft power is all about. The most attractive societies have the greatest soft power.

Communists just use their vision for an unattainable socialist utopia to justify cruelty, bloodshed and tyranny. Soft power does not fit with these methods. After all, 'Power grows out of the barrel of a gun' according to Mao. What he and most communists fail to realize is that in many circumstances the pen is mightier than the sword and far more able to bring about desired change.

China's population will peak at around 1.4 billion then fall to a stable 1.2 billion. I don't ever see the U.S reaching that figure so China's economy should remain larger in the long run. India's population is meant to be heading for 1.6 Billion on a smaller area than either the U.S or China. I'm not sure if they could handle it though, especially with climate change affecting the region.

Who cares what ranking China is assigned.

What is important is whether those who live within Chinese borders are happy with their lives.

The USA are ranked as No. 1 but number 1 what? Not all the No. 1 positions that the USA has achieved are in any way desirable or enviable.

China never cared to be the top dog on the planet.  It just wants to be left alone to do its own thing.  China never wanted to trade with the West.  Emperor Qian Long told the British emissary, China has everything it needed.  It did well when the West tried to trade with China, and lost its shirt, until it thought of the Opium War and the Opium Trade, verbally defended by none other than the apologist of the British East India Company, Adam Smith, who equated Opium Trade with Free Trade.  At one time, all the Spanish silver looted by the British ended up in the Manchu treasury, just to see how competitive China's economy was even then.
