Premier spends New Year eve with disaster survivors

BEIJING - Premier Wen Jiabao spent the Chinese Lunar New Year eve with locals who survived a 2008 deadly earthquake and a 2010 devastated mudslide in northwest China's Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.Concerned with reconstruction of the disaster-hit areas, Wen traveled more than 720 km on Friday and Saturday to visit people of various ethnic groups, ahead of the Spring Festival, which falls on Sunday this year.

In the spirit of the Spring Festival and also it would likely be his last official visit to the poor, I would hope the Chinese Premier himself would be generous enough to distribute his personal Chinese New Year red-packets to the thousands or millions of China's hard-core poor as a gesture of good-will. Surely he can afford that.

在中國新年的精神,這將可能是他的最後一次正式訪問的窮人,我希望中國總理本人將慷慨地分配他的新年紅包數千或數百萬中國的差人口人們顯示了他的良好意願。當然,他可以負擔得起。
