My feelings at the time were that Saddam was a useful idiot to the US. He was used both against Iran and also as the bogey-man to threaten the other Arab states with and keep them in line.

There was some hope in the 80s that he would "see the light" like Sadat of Egypt, but he proved stubborn and uncompromising, the making of his downfall.
The world needs more idiots like me, all the others think they are clever.
