China activist Chen Guangcheng seeks US action on case

BBC 1st August 2012

Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, who arrived in the US in May, has urged Washington to investigate his case and protect his family at home.

Speaking after meetings in the US Congress, Mr Chen said Beijing had not fulfilled guarantees made to him when he left China.

Mr Chen sparked diplomatic tensions when he escaped house arrest and fled to the US embassy in Beijing in April.

The blind campaigner arrived in the US in May after negotiations.

The 40-year-old moved with his wife and two children, but has expressed concerns about the friends and family he left behind.

His nephew, Chen Kegui, has reportedly been arrested and charged with manslaughter after a dispute with local officials who came looking for Mr Chen following the escape from house arrest.

'Cannot be silent'

"The Chinese central government explicitly promised me that it would thoroughly investigate the extended oppression and abuse that I endured in Shandong province," Mr Chen told a news conference.

"The government further promised to provide for the security of my family. However, it has been more than three months and I have not received any news on the progress of this investigation or even whether it has commenced," he said.

Mr Chen was flanked by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican John Boehner, and his Democratic counterpart, Nancy Pelosi, who both said they intended to pressure China to improve its human rights record.

"We can't remain silent when fundamental human rights are violated, we can't remain silent when religious liberty remains under attack, we cannot remain silent regarding China's reprehensible one-child policy," Mr Boehner said.

Speaking afterward, Ms Pelosi said:"I don't often say this, Mr Speaker, but I do wish to associate myself with your remarks."

The BBC's Adam Brookes in Washington says that Mr Chen has many sympathisers in the US Congress - but like many exiled Chinese dissidents before him, he may find it hard to effect the change he seeks in his home country.

Mr Chen was sentenced to more than four years in prison in 2006 after exposing abuses in China's one-child policy. He was released in 2010 but later put under house arrest.

The Chinese authorities have allowed him to leave the country to study at New York University School of Law.

My personal comment on this:

Surely this is some kind of media comedy where we are given the idea that the US Congress is being asked by a Chinese citizen to investigate China over its internal affairs. What has this to do with the American Congress and its main speakers and is this not just another case of blatant political interventionism and something the hegemonic US has been part of ever since its foundation in a land stolen from murdered indigenous peoples? How does this get to be a major news item to be placed at the forefront to the American and western publics and can a voting citizen of the US get free accommodation, free education, free healthcare, free transport and top level meetings with congress? I doubt it! However, I am sure that right now another medal is being struck by Congress even as we discuss in a cynical attempt to prove to the less than aware American people that the US is at the very front of the human rights debate.

But what is the core of this issue? That would mainly start with the One-Child-Policy in China which is a statute in law restricting urban dwellers to one child per couple. The obvious and clear intention is not to deny human rights, but rather to save future generations in an already overcrowded country from starving to death due to a possible insufficient food supply. On paper it is a perfectly logical idea, but it is part of a whole debate that has raged for years. Meanwhile the sovereign state of China has the right in international law to dictate and decide the laws that suit the country of China, and in theory it is the responsibility of that same government to try and ensure that future generations do not suffer famine which China has been so criticized for in the past. This incidentally is also part of a media ruse to damage China’s image as the British never get criticized by that same media for the avoidable deaths of millions in India this last century whilst under direct British rule. This is another hypocrisy of gigantic proportions, especially as China and India have experienced up to one hundred or more famines ever since the British arrived on their doorsteps. I digress ……..

The idea behind the One-Child-Policy is a sound idea but the future implications on familial life are just now being found to have some negative affects and the policy is being relaxed. Despite its drawbacks the policy has overall been a resounding success in that the intended goal has been achieved.

And just where does our intrepid Mr. Chen fit into this matter? It would seem that Mr. Chen and his foreign NGO’s have decided that late abortions are an abomination and that this would make a suitable human rights scheme to defame China’s One-Child-Policy, and in a way they are quite right. Many were disgusted by a recent event involving a picture of a dead foetus in just such a similar case and in an ironic way this almost justifies Mr. Chen’s campaign. The focus here must come back to the Chinese government for allowing such incidents to escalate in the first place and they should shoulder some of the blame when their own agents do not uphold state law in a humane and logical manner. That said blame must also be apportioned to the ‘perpetrator’ and that would be a female who in full knowledge of the law and its implications seeks to break that law which was set in the first place to protect the future of China and the Chinese people.

Compliance with the law even if it seems an illogical one is still the duty of citizens in all countries and contravention of a law especially with intent to do so is illegal. Again, this is a matter for interpretation and debate which would be another discussion. When a female becomes pregnant and is aware where that stands with regards to society there is still a responsibility on the part of that person to act according to the law, and avoiding this in order for it to become a much more complicated matter is ignorance and deliberate avoidance. It has to be remembered that the Chinese Government does not make females pregnant and that is usually accomplished by a knowing and willing act on the part of a female. Therefore, both sides of this debate can be found to be in contravention of their basic duties to each other and in some way maybe Mr. Chen in being part of the problem may well be part of the solution and there is obviously still much to be discussed.

The point of this post is not where should the blame lay and what is the right direction in the future, but rather to ask not only those questions but a further more important one to me which is. What makes the United States believe that it has the right in the first place to make Mr. Chen a star in the US and for what purpose? Is it that in vilifying China’s supposed faults it proves that the US take human rights seriously, and I think that needs looking at right there.

Continuation ..........

The United States record on human rights is traditionally a very grim one. After they had finished slaughtering each other in the American Civil War their government focused their angst against Spain and using modern iron ships they crushed the wooden armada type boats and took Cuba, Peurto Rico and the Philippines. At first the Philippinos were elated and when they were denied independence the Philippinos rebelled and around 800,000 of them were massacred. Also around this time the US seized Hawaii and Panama and other islands in the Pacific. Following this in WWII the US carpet bombed civilians in Germany and created massive food shortages much of which caused starvation in most areas and especially work camps. After the war the US allegedly starved 1.5 million German P.O.Ws to death in camps and repatriated thousands of allied Polish soldiers to the Russians and certain death. The US jumped into Korea in 1950 and stopped a civil war and in doing so killed 5 million Koreans and they quickly followed this with 4 million deaths in Vietnam. Incidentally, Ho Chi Minh was a trained US guerilla fighter and the US promised independence for Vietnam after WWII. It never happened and Ho became a Communist.

Coming more up to date we have the illegal invasion of Iraq and the alleged death of a million people, and this was followed by Afghanistan where death for civilians is a ‘way of life’ if you can call it that. Finally, in Libya the ‘no-fly-zone’ was where thousands were allegedly killed on the ground by airborne planes to ‘save life’.

This is the US in the constant fight for claimed freedom against the enemy of which there have been so many now starting with Americans, then Spanish, then Philippinos, then Korean Communists, then Vietnamese Communists, then WMD, then Al-Quaida another US trained group. For the US there is always another enemy with people worth killing and those on the current future list being N. Korea, Iran and possibly China. We also should remember the US is the only country to use atomic bombs and also threatened to use them on three occasions on China. Like it is nothing right ……..  !

Does the US really care about each individual human life with so many millions already to its score, or is it a blind to create the list of enemies needed to keep its almost contiguous war and constant death-rate going? Many might say well that was all necessary and mostly history so maybe it might be a good time to look at the US today, the land of the ‘Free and the Brave’.

In the land of the free there are about 7 million US citizens in the prison system and some of these are on death row waiting for ……. Yes, you guessed it legalized death. The US despite its claims of being the premier delivery system for ‘freedom and democracy’ have illegal jails with illegal detention such as the shameful Guantanamo which is more land stolen from a foreign government. They have ‘rendition’ which is legal, where they can whip you away off the street and disappear you to a former eastern bloc country for torture and interrogation. They have an open policy on assassination and many other acts which are exclusively outside of human rights and with the new Patriot Act laws any citizen can be taken into custody an held without notification to anyone. As for the ‘Brave’ would that be those pilots who whoop and holler as they blow-up civilians in foreign lands eliminating three generations of a family in one go who were just going about their normal business.

The US along with its little sister state Israel have an appalling human rights record and frequently use the UN to block human rights being investigated when it involves America and Israel. All this human rights crappolla is sold to the American and western people as if the US government actually believed in it and operated within its most fundamental rules.

Looking at the previous it would not be hard to come to the conclusion that the US is the very anti-thesis of human rights, and it most cases it is used to gain control of countries by using fake corporate democracy to expose them to the corporate led media that rules our planet.

That same fake ‘free-media’ use cases such as Mr. Chen, Ai Weiwei, Liu Xiaobo, the Dalai Lama to name just a few medal winners or future medal winners to highlight supposed iniquity in target competitors such as China whilst ignoring terrible US massacres such as in places like Fullujah. That same media does not highlight families devastated and destroyed by drones and they are just an enumeration casually mentioned and only occasionally. That same media that focuses on the human rights slights in China does not tell its readers about the political activists held without trial in Saudi, Qatari or other US friendly countries, and some for as many as 13 years. Where is Congress and the medals for these human rights activists and why do they have no mention?  All these things are avoided because whilst they are genuine human rights violations they are an embarrassment to a regime that has only one agenda, and that is to control all the money and resources irrespective of any human rights.

How can a cynical manipulating government such as that in the US actually believe with their massive daily violations of human life believe they have the right to adjudicate in the matter of Mr. Chen. As a Chinese citizen Mr. Chen was held under house arrest for knowingly breaking the law in China, and this is a punishment far less drastic than a drone-strike or even assassination. Mr. Chen has made a choice to make a brave stand on his aesthetic principles, but he has never been denied the right to live as a normal person within the law in China. He is making his stand and I believe the Chinese government can and will learn from this.

However, to actually see the posturing Nazi Pelosi and friends making Mr. Chen into some kind of ‘star’ in the US is quite sickening and it is time that ordinary Americans asked why their own rights are so few when compared to Mr. Chen and how their own government’s heinous record both at home and abroad gives that same government the right to stand as a judge in a matter between the sovereign state of China and a sovereign citizen of China.

If this murderous US regime of warmongers believes that it has the right to be a world policeman and interfere in China and indeed any other country, then first it must clean up its own act and start complying with UN resolutions. In addition, it should withdraw its massive tentacled war machine from around the world, and furthermore desist in dealing out indiscriminate death to anyone in its way in the name of human rights.

That is why the US embassy sold him back to the Chinese government after he stayed for 6 days in the US embassy. They hope him to STAY in China to maximize his role as a sh1t stirrer in China. However, they under estimate the will of this blind man who called directly from the hospital room in Beijing to the US congress, twice, and created great dilemma for Obama who is running for his next term. Obama had to give in to him to secure more votes.
