How much do you have to pay to marry a woman? Well, in Heze, East China's Shangdong province, the answer is quite clear: the future groom should pay at least 3.3 jin (1.8 kilos or 3.6 pounds) of cash in 100 rmb notes.

That's roughly 136,000 yuan or 21610 us dollars.

And that's just for engagement...

How much are you willing to pay to get married? And for those who have married, how much have you spent?

Well,my father-in-law expected 50.000 EURO!!! Of course I didn't pay that much...the idea of buying your wife is horrible to me and we had some "cultural clashes" about this and other "customs". Fortunately my wife was on my side.

50,000 euros?? My gosh...

Still it pales when compared with what Chinese men have to pay. Apart from the money paid to your future in-laws during engagement, you are expected to buy an apartment and preferably a car before you can marry your girl.

That's sad for a young man.

I'd pay them NOTHING.

In cities like Shanghai this might be true. But on the countryside it ain't a house and a car. I know cases in my wife's(and now also my)family where a girl got married for 80.000 RMB and a trike(those sanlunche) as well as some furniture. Another guy had to give some 10.000 RMB and a motorbike as well as some stuff like a tv etc. Also houses on the countryside go for only a small amount of what you'd have to pay in cities like Beijing or Shangers.

Yeah, totally true. Still the money spent is a large part of their savings.

But I'd say this custom is unique to China.
