A growing number of Americans are displaying anxiety and pessimism about the perception that the United States is in decline on the world stage.

The media are constantly raising the alarm that the US' privilege and prestige are slipping away, and the great minds of the nation are earnestly debating what that means and what can be done.

All this is understandable in the wake of the global financial crisis, which has placed capitalism under scrutiny, and the US' high unemployment, huge national debt, and ballooning budget deficit.

While spending trillions of dollars on the war on terror in the past decade, the US has failed to address such necessary tasks as upgrading its infrastructure and fixing its education system.

This is in stark contrast to the phenomenal growth achieved in the past decade by emerging countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, whose combined GDP is expected to surpass that of the US by 2015.

There is no doubt that these developing nations have become increasingly active on the world stage. They are also demanding a bigger say in global governance.

The strong call for a candidate from a developing nation to replace Robert Zoellic, the World Bank president who will step down in June, is just the most recent example. Traditionally, the head of the international organization charged with reducing poverty and supporting development has been an American, and as such the body has often seemed to be an instrument of US policy.

But the world is different now.

In his new book No One's World: The West, The Rising Rest and the Coming Global Turn, Georgetown University Professor Charles Kupchan argues that the future of the world will not be dominated by the US, China, India, or anyone else.
For the first time in history, the world will be interdependent and not dominated by one or two powers.

Kupchan believes the world is becoming more politically and ideologically diverse. The emerging nations are following their own path to modernity and embracing their own conceptions of domestic and international order.

However, Robert Kagen, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, argues in his latest book, The World America Made, that if the US were to commit "pre-emptive superpower suicide", there would be war among rising nations as they fought for power, the retreat of democracy around the world and the weakening of the global free-market economy, which the US created and has supported for more than 60 years.

It is true that the US has been the world superpower for decades and in many ways played a positive role. But that does not mean such power is not abused from time to time, such as in the case of the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the continuation of the half-a-century embargo on Cuba.

And in this sense, the rise of other nations would help check the excessive influence wielded by the only superpower.

The US will remain as a major power in this multi-polar world. Its decline is likely to be relative.

Yet, the rise of developing nations means that hundreds of millions of people from Asia, Africa and Latin America are being lifted out of poverty - a great achievement for humanity - and have a greater voice in international affairs. And in this context, the relative decline of the US helps build a more balanced and perhaps more harmonious world, worth celebrating even by Americans.

The author, based in New York, is deputy editor of China Daily US edition.

Yeahhh, Voice ....... but by contrast (and I am eager to finish and write at the end of this message 'vive la difference..!!') .... the USA, .... please, tell Chen Weihua, ........ the USA as opposed to China, Russia, India and Brazil ......can close its gates 'hermetically'.... any time, ....... generate its own goods and services, for the next 50 years ... grow, progress, and come out of it untouched ...

The four aforementioned "powers to be", they can't go too far on the game, without strong consumer markets in the WEST, because other than food and basic goods ... they are still in the stone ages of consumerism ...

So, ....... Mr or Madame Chen, be careful what you wish for the USA and the WEST ... these days...
Every night, before you get in bed, pray that the WEST remains healthy and strong ...... so  you can keep exploiting the workers of the four aformentioned powers to be .... for the purpose of supplying the ingredients of 'a low cost'/'better standard of living' ..... to the peoples of those nations that you prophetize their imminent decay and fall...

...

the western oligarchs can easily install a Chinese from taiwan, or hong kong into the world bank as a pupet, and then get the westerners jealous and further anti Chinese sentiment, using demagogy to expand their demagogic rhetoric that "the Chinese own us", pushing the fear mongering ticket, while still carrying out imperialist policies with a Chinese face. people in general, only see the face, and assume that a Chinese is a Chinese, not realising there are Chinese who will carry out anti Chinese policies, in the same way that 0bama has carried out anti black policies. they more or less was somewhat successful by installing 0bama, as a black face, and then carry out the white mans interest, while funding the tea party to continue the legacy of anti black sentiments. you get a Chinese man, or woman, better woman, because this will give the illusion that america respects womens rights, in the same way that electing 0bama made america "unracist". then you have this woman dress up in traditional Chinese clothing, giving the american public the illusion that thiis a real Chinese, while invoking fear into the xenophobic americans. you get this woman to go to a buddhist temple, and then this is when you mobilise the christian right. you might even film this woman eating a dog, in order to get the americans emotionally charged. you get them to say ridiculous things like this woman doesnt respect christian values, and that she is unchristian, and unfit to head the world bank. many christian dupes can be utilised under this aspect. you get them to say that China is trying to turn the world bank "communist," and you once again play the anti communist card. heck, if the americans play their cards right, they might even blame all the world bank's crimes on China, because it's now being headed by a Chinese from hk or tw. you get this pupet from hk, or tw that barely even speaks english, giving her illusion of being a real Chinese. to the average idiot, this HAS to be a real Chinese, because she cant even speak english. most americans dont know the difference between a taiwanese, honger, or mainlander, and will assume they are all the same, not realising that tw, and hk are servants of the west, the uncle tom of China, and will be completely clueless about the pupet's true intent. then you get some far right wing demagog, like tancredo or someone like that and get the americans all hyped up, as if this were a wwf wrestling match. then you (oligarchs) carry out massive austerity measures while the people are busy arguing about a Chinese woman heading the world bank. appointing the hk, tw'er will also give the illusion once again that america isnt a racist country, and that westerners are fair and balanced, and willing to give others a chance, silencing critics from across the world. you (oligarchs) will then use your media and spin it precisely this way. you also get all the fake left liberal alternative media (democracy now, huffington post) to publish the same, and voila, even more people silenced. you also silence many of the current proponents of a "real" Chinese, Indian, Brazilian to head the world bank.

excessive consumerism is not something to be celebrated my ziofriend.

Excess is disease driven by greed , USA is one big blown up balloon ......air is coming out and i suggest all those that can leave balloon leave it now.

Human being can live on much less and much healthier , we don't need all this useless gadgets that we spend money on ............we can live on much less better meaningful life ...........sustainable life.

For example big houses that most people never pay off and often bank reposes is nothing but human stupidity and greed.

Why not build small ecofriendly house?

Cars , why such big cars with eight cylinders , gas guzzlers?

What is advantage of such excess?

More you get hooked on consumerism more you want , more you want more you have to work to pay for it.

It doesn't make sense to me , must a be better healthier way of life.

USA way of life is at the end of road we all know it , but USA has never been sustainable ….......USA lived on theft and pillaging.

Time for change of die , Darwin ain't dummy.

Economic crisis in America is already 4 years old,

Economic crisis in China is 4 years coming.

At this stage of the cycle, China is marked by arrogance and veto in Syria.

the source of world tension lies squarely in Beijing.
I've made my living, Mr. Thompson, in large part as a gambler. Some days I make twenty bets, some days I make none. There are weeks, sometimes months, in fact, when I don't make any bet at all because ...
