Political slurs

Pingado, I'm quite used to being slurred as politically correct and left wing, neither of which is correct. I believe in the free enterprise system which has always demonstrated its superiority over all other forms of economic organisation. But I do recognise that Marxism contains a useful critique of what happens when a market system becomes dominated by monopoly capitalism - which is precisely what is happening today.

Your accusation that I am a "self-hating westerner" is not merely a lie, but it is offensive. Firstly, I love my country and have always been a loyal citizen. Secondly - and this is why I am annoyed with you - I come from a military family. Four generations of my family have fought and died for our country and continue to do so today. I am named after an Uncle who died at the battle of Monte Casino in Italy.

I do not however subscribe to the view "my country right or wrong". Britain and the West have done some pretty appalling things in the past. I for one consider my patriotism to be strong enough to face up to them.

The Problem

Also being a fellow brit, the problem is that too many people think that the UK is paved with gold.
Unfortunatly it's not true, yes the wages are high and so is the cost of living, the goverment is clamping down on 'work-dodgers' (those who just don't want to work)
People see the UK as an easy target to live, people pay high prices to traffickers to get there.  It was such a problem once, that Britain had to ask France to close down one of it's illegal immigrants camp near the Dover crossing border.  Peole were jumping on trains, boats, trucks (lorries) to get to England, to find no jobs, no place to live, and with no excuse, no goverment to help.  If you want to go to England, save your money go for a holiday (you'll soon want to come back to China) or work hard at work or your Education.
Believe me, your money goes a lot further here than in Britain.
Also tell me, what does Britain offer, that China cannot?
Life is what you want it to be

I wish I had a webcam here

I'm writing this from work in the middle of a class! The boss is away at a meeting. I'm surrounded by five Chinese students in the room here plus another mixed group of around twelve in the adjacent room. They include Anglo-Saxons, Africans, Chinese, Malaysians even a Scot.

I don't know whether the Chinese education system inculcates civic virtues, but what I can tell you is that the Chinese students are the most hard working, decent, respectful and polite of all my students. The Africans come second.

The only fault of the Chinese here is that they are not vocal enough and not poltical enough.

Must go a student needs help. Damn.

"SE Asia is less attractive now, so they head for Europe"

well its lot more attractive than it was 20 years ago.  Each time i visit South East Asia, like China it changes alot better than it was before. It's just because of the better trasnportation, more access to foreign countries makes chinese to go abroad in bigger numbers naturally.
Before these people did not get the chance, now they do. Besides China is big, there will be always some immigrants going without proper documents.

For me, even though living in Europe most of my life, i would probably want to move back to Asia. why? because its getting better and more opportunities to do what you want as long as it keeps its GDP growth rate. More and more highly educated chinese people in abroad are flowing back to China.

Less attractive? don't think so.

"The only fault of the Chinese here is that they are not vocal enough and not poltical enough."

thats quite true in general i feel as well. In my class i can see Chinese people not active enough and they tend to be more shy and less outspoken. I often tell them to stand up and do presentations in a more vocal and less shy ways because it isn't very professional. It is difficult for them facing different leanguage and culture.  Takes time for them to get use to it =)

Don't worry about language neocortex

In my classes I have mixed groups of Africans, Chinese, British and heaven knows who else.

The Africans always have the most "presence". They're good at eye contact, head errect and so forth. They project confidence even when their language is not so good. And if they don't like something they soon let you know. I think Chinese people could learn a lot from Africans in this respect - especially in dealing with Westerners.

It's culture I'm sure

Just imagine if Chinese people copied Bruce Lee. Nobody would dare mess with them.
