one of the differences lies in where the government funds go.  some of the education funds never go to the school in poor areas like these , but actually  go to other people's pockets or for other purposes.

Rural teachers get support from local woman

Wu Jinxiu, left, talks with a volunteer teacher in Shangchao village, East China's Jiangxi province, Dec 15, 2011. Wu, who is in her 70s, has been taking care of volunteer teachers for more than 30 years. Due to the poor living conditions in the village, many teachers are not willing to stay long-term.

To keep the teachers around for local students, Wu began taking care of them by cooking meals, washing clothes, making medicines for the sick and inviting them to live in her house. [Photo/Xinhua]

Note:
Has anyone given a thought why this poor woman has taken over the duties or responsibilities that, rightfully, should be the Government's?

And China as a developing country has the HIGHEST RATE OF LITERACY as compared to many developing countries, deserves our congratulations.

In many of the developing countries you have listed, they do not have 3.2 trillions $ in FR like what China has. Would it be too much for the Chinese government to build some decent schools with hostels for the students and living quaters for the teachers where necessary? I don't think so.

Sansukong,

What I meant to say is that the OP here is sensationalising things in China and making an unfair comparison to invoke negative feelings against China and her government.

The reason why I am concerned about the unevenly high number of gweilos writing on this forum as compared to the number of Chinese forumites is EXACTLY the risks of such bad-press and sensational biased stories about China and negative propaganda based on fallacy.  Gweilos have a tendency to be busy body especially over governance matters in other countries.  Probabaly they still think they are "superior" to others and, therefore, reserve the right to make judgment about others and how they live.

We should not be naive and believe that OP has any good intentions for China or her people by making such extreme contrasting comparison.

As for the old lady who has provided for the teachers for 30 years it has demonstrated that she can afford to do so.  Yes, having the government take over the role would be good but, to the old lady, I am sure she is happy to be given the opportunity to do a good deed for her neighbours' children given their special conditions.

Further, the school in the countryside is only providing primary level education.  Once the kids reach the age of higher education, they will have to move to bigger towns and cities.  They will join schools and have access to facilities that are Government-sponsored.

As for the government's trillion dollar reserves, they should be preserved and used wisely for important purposes.

Mr. Whampoa!

You are improving!
Look at the pictures carefully.......
Forget about the gweilos......

From my point of view, the gweilos are pretty smart operators.
Our own Chinese people - are BRIBED, THREATENED, HARASSED, often by our own tribe or clan.....

Mind you - China now has a WINDOW of opportunity between 2000 to 2030.
Thereafter demographic, better technological durable developments will be felt....
And I can see the BRITISH, some of the more capable AMERICAN ops understand that.....

to an open, democratic Society that is.

to a monopolistic, authoritarian, regime, active citizenr ...

These situation seems true even in WESTERN and CONTINENTAL situation.

The state often "produced standardized institutions", the CIVIL SOCIETY creates improvements.....
The middle class often are the CITIZENS with the "best understanding of shortfalls" and have the "time and resources" to assist.

BUT you should notice the pictures posted......

..........it was meant to "paint an opinion"! It's not the correct picture actually, especially if you travel to China frequently. I use to travel often around the region, with occasional visits to Europe, and USA.

The China Daily Op "paints" a picture of poor quality school in different provinces and geographic regions. A visit  to Europe's heavily populated Hill, coastal and River Valley shows how far China can achieve with better ADMINISTRATIVE reforms.

YOU probably has become KINDER to China, after understanding the next 2 decade's issues........
