I suggest going to wikipedia.com for definitions of liberalism. There are two major aspects of liberalism. "Classical liberalism" emphasizes individual liberty. "Social liberalism" emphasizes equality. These two aspects sometimes conflict. But thoughtful liberals seek to develop a pragmatic compromise between the two aspects. Basic to liberalism is the concept of non-violent discussions seeking compromise and the freedom to question any religious or political authority. Naturally, because Mao was authoritarian, he rejected classical liberalism. But some elements of Marxism or communism can be compatable with social liberalism.
