Maybe the outrage of this situation will lead to change?

Sounds like the laws need to be changed to encourage instead of punishing people for helping.

Everything needs a trigger.  So, maybe this will turn into a good thing?

At the heart of this issue is money.

Nobody wants to be implicated in financial costs of the incident. So, they said. I doubt it. It's a combination of money (financial self-interest) and depravity of the society.

Another reason that is related to money might also deter one from setting foot in China: forced shopping in China's tourism system.

As anyone would know, tour groups mainly from Asian countries are required to shop at every local city they visit. But the shops are specially selected by local tour guides (di pei) of the city. And the tour guide fully in charge of the whole trip called 'quan pei' will discourage you to buy anything that's not designated by the local tour guides. If tourists don't spend enough, hell breaks loose. The local tour guide will spew venoms in the bus. And the next local tour guide in the next city will start giving warning to the group.

The famous story like A-Zhen in Hong Kong is not a one-off case. The speech seems standard throughout China regardless where you go: Xiamen, Chengdu, Shanghai, Beijing... you hear the same standard speech all the time.

- Local business operators will say they grew up or lived or have relatives in the city you came from. So you get special discounts. Must buy!
- Doors will be closed when you enter the premise. Sometimes, it's even locked. And you're required to spend at least 1 hour inside the shop!
- If you didn't spend enough, the local tour guide have the right to bring you to another shop. And the whole process begin.
- When they rant vehemently, they'll mostly say this: "Your group is the worst in my xx years of job as tourist guide. Previous groups from your country never fared so worst like you all did! How much you gonna spend next?!" Imagine the look on all the tourists looking at each other.

Imagine what I went through in China. And all those I know experienced the same unpleasant trip. Westerners can be exempted because their tour package is usually more expensive. Tour packages offered to Asian countries are darn cheap to attract visitors. So they have to earn more through hard-selling when tourists arrive.

Something's got to be done to help improve the image of the country

I never join any group tour when I come to China.

So, I enjoy all my trips in China very much.

But there was a domestic group tour that I joined in Shanghai.  I remember we visited Pudong and the Chinese tour guide was like speeding all the way.  I didn't like it.  Anyway, I visited the place again on my own and enjoyed the leisure pace.

You could say that with anger or serious attitude but we those born and live in this country have no right to say the same. we know it's not good but we have to make it turn less bad or prevent it from turning worse cause our offsprings will live in this land .

whampoa: "I never join any group tour when I come to China. So, I enjoy all my trips in China very much"

Quite true. Still, it's better to travel with a local friend who can tell you which shop or restaurant to avoid. You don't want to get cheated buying fake stuff or consumed 'recycled saliva'.

desperado: "You could say that with anger or serious attitude but we..."

Sometimes we get overly emotional about an issue because we feel strongly about it. China is huge. There are so many people in China. And we know there are many good, civilized citizens too. Unfortunately, due to its sheer size, any minority amount is a big amount. It can be overwhelming when a small section of the society with bad attitude comes together and show themselves in their natural behaviour. It's hard for a lot of foreigners to take
