Rome descends into chaos as protests turn violent

15 October, 2011

What was initially planned as a peaceful 揙ccupy Rome?protest turned into a violent demonstration in the Italian capital. Police reportedly used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds of angry Italians.

Protesters wearing masks and helmets threw rocks, bottles and other objects at police in riot gear. Some wielded clubs, while others were armed with hammers.

The demonstration against the government抯 economic policy, with a crowd estimated at 200,000, descended into violent chaos when groups of angry protesters set cars on fire, smashed windows and attacked shops.

Protesters also attacked the Defense Ministry and set a wing of the building on fire.

At least one person was injured and taken to a hospital, the Al Jazeera television network reported.

The protests in the Italian capital were modeled on the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstration against capitalism and austerity measures, which went global Saturday with dozens of marches and protests worldwide.

The website for the international movement said 951 cities in 87 countries were ready to 揢nite for Global Change??the official slogan of the rally. Sizable protests were held in Spain, the UK and New York.

u.s. is not ignoring the revolution. it is covered in the media. it's controlled dissent.

What strikes us as odd is that the muckraking-crazy US media seem to have lost their sensitive news nose amid the spreading protests descending on their own soil. Mainstream American media of either turn a completely blind eye or try to play down the mass unrest storming their own streets.

This is just in a violent contrast with their eagerness to hype up the mass events of such kind, of course, if they all occurred in other countries. The rarely mute and subdued practice of the US mainstream media is also in departure with tenets of their oft-sung 揻ree media.?They even show some reluctance to go figure in covering the Wall Street protests which a new poll shows that most Americans sympathize with.

Some have even gone so far as to insult people taking to the streets as 搃diots?

This is very true.Notice these protesters ( I admit I do not watch the Telescreens) do not speak about 9/11
truth, the cruel Turkey shoots in the Middle East and so on.This controlled dissent is merely a safety valve to
allow the disenfranchised (the 99%) to blow off a little steam.

So far, the Occupy Wall Street movement has been civilized and well behaved.

Their good behavior is a good example to other protesters around the world.
