In my 40s I returned to college to get a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies.  Made dean's list several times.  Early academic record is a disaster.  Over the course of almost 40 years in the work force it was my experience that 'educability', flexibility, and work ethic meant more than academic performance.  In the work force, certifications reflecting proficiency have come to mean more than academic degrees.  Probably a consequence of perceived 'dumbing-down' in American education.
