Vice-Premier Li Keqiang begins a three-day visit to Hong Kong that a veteran China watcher says is another gesture to confirm he will succeed Wen Jiabao as the country's premier.

Li will arrive from Shenzhen after officiating at the opening of the Universiade, or world university games. It will be his first official visit to Hong Kong.

Dr Willy Wo-lap Lam, a China watcher and a senior fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, said the trip was aimed at reaffirming Li's status as the nation's next premier. Wen is expected to retire from his party position next year and step down as premier in early 2013.
