A Shandong farmer is suspected to have killed himself yesterday (April 19) after finding out his cabbage could only sell for 0.16 yuan($0.02 -- 2 cents) per kilo at the wholesale market, a local newspaper reported.

Han Jin, a 39-year-old villager, is said to have hanged himself in apparent dispair, according to his fellow villagers.

So I heard the prices of vegetables in China are falling --- at the expense of human lives?
For those who are living in China, do you really feel the prices are falling?

..

0.16 yuan($0.02 -- 2 cents) per kilo ???? I don't know the present price of cabbage per kilogram.

Ren Zhiqiang, one famous property developer, said one cabbage is about RMB 2 in Beijing in 2009. (not measured by per kilogram, but one cabbage)
the same cabbage was about RMB 0.02 in Beijing in 1980.

++++++++++++++++++++++
I did the search just now.  It's maybe the failure of the speculation.

The price of cabbage was rising last year. Many people want to earn wealth from the rising prices, So many people stored huge amounts of cabbage last year. But now the supply, that is to say huge amount of storage, is much larger than the demand in market.

+++++++++++++
But this single case can't change the fact that the prices of almost everything are soaring now.

Vegetables normally cost Rmb4 per kg in the Federation.
Cabbage is the most productive vegetable in the farm, you get around 30 tonnes to a hectare every year!

So, In china, it must be either Rmb2 to Rmb4!
BUT for me to be sure - a visit to the Super centers of China would help a lot.

here the cabbage refer to Chinese cabbage.  in #1 DanseMacabre's post.

It is a different vegetable from the cabbage in the western society.

I don't know if you refer to the same cabbage in #4 post.

I often eat both Chinese cabbage and the western cabbage.

Chinese cabbage is "Da Bai Cai" in Chinese Pinyin.

west cabbage is "Juan Xin Cai" in Chinese Pinyin.

If your vegetable's too cheap, you can either hang yourself... or plant a diffrent kind. I would have chosen the latter.
