Protesters gather outside White House against military mission in Libya

Protesters gather outside White House against military mission in Libya

Protesters on Saturday gathered outside the White House to rally against the U.S. military operation in Libya, calling on Washington to quit meddling in the Northern African country, as well as cautioning against the intervention becoming a protracted engagement like the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Carrying signs that say "$ for Jobs and Schools, not War on Libya," "Stop U.S. French and British War on Libya," dozens of protesters lined outside the White House, shouting "We've seen this war before, same story different war," expressing their opposition to the intervention, which entered its second week with U.S. and coalition military enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya by bombing government targets.

Brian Becker, national director of the ANSWER coalition, an anti-war umbrella group, said they are protesting the bombing of Libya, and "people are doing this all over the United States, Los Angeles, San Francisco."

"United States has no right to bomb Libya. It has no right to pretend it's a champion of freedom and democracy. Only Libya can determine its destiny," said Becker.

The view was echoed by Betsy Harmon, an activist with DC 9/11 Truth Organization. Harmon said that "it's a lie that we are bombing Libya for humanitarian purposes, that doesn't make any sense."

"Libya has oil" that the United States "wants to control," said Harmon, who carries a sign that says "Libya (War) is about Oil, not Human Rights." There is a connection between "American aggression and American lies," she said.

Burdened by the unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq while the country slowly recovers from the worst recession in decades, the Obama administration is walking a thin line on Libya, repeatedly saying it won't lead the coalition for the long-run, and is in the process of transferring command of the mission to NATO, a position much doubted by protesters in front of the White House.

"Who runs NATO? Come on," sneered Harmon.

"That's a fraud," said Becker. "When the U.S. hands the mission to NATO, it's handing the mission over to itself." He said NATO has been a U.S.-led military operation since it was formed.

Becker said the situation in Libya should be resolved with peaceful means, and the international society should give the Libyan sides time and space to resolve their conflict by themselves.

"There's been many efforts that try to start negotiations between the Gaddafi government and the rebels," said Becker. " Negotiations are the way to go."

US gears up for massive anti-war rallies

Wed Apr 6, 2011 12:26AM

Thousands of anti-war activists are set to hold rallies in New York and San Francisco to deplore the US military's interventions in the Middle East and North Africa.

The United National Anti-war Committee and the Muslim Peace Coalition, representing national and local Muslim organizations in the US, are the main organizers of the major national anti-war rallies at Union Square in New York on Saturday April 9, and in San Francisco on Sunday April 10, one of the organizers, the International Action Center (IAC), stated on its website.

More than 500 peace, justice, labor, civic, religious, and civil liberties organizations have unanimously endorsed the planned rallies to protest wars, condemn terrorism, fight Islamophobia and support the Islamic awakening surging throughout the Middle East.

Imams from New York are calling Muslims in the state to come out in droves for the rally and express their outrage at the US military's interventions in Libya and other Middle Eastern countries.

Organizers say they intend to turn a harsh spotlight on the urgency of responding to ongoing US-led military strikes on Libya, and underscore the need to put an end to the costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The plight of Gazans in the occupied Palestinian territories and continued harassment of Muslims in the US are widely expected to be brought into a sharper focus during the massive protests.

"Because of the dangerous escalation of attacks on Muslims across the US, solidarity and unity of the antiwar movement with our Muslim sisters and brothers has become a major focus of these 2 major national rallies," the IAC added.

The group, founded by former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, is an organization which "opposes US military intervention in all circumstances."

Meanwhile, in a statement endorsed by 100 Imams of New York, they said, "We, 100 Imams from the Muslim community in New York area, stand together to thank our neighbors who have defended the Muslim community against Islamophobia."

The protesters are also to voice their anger over new attacks on labor unions and their collective bargaining rights namely in the US state of Wisconsin, and a new rounds of cuts in social programs, particularly hitting the African-American and immigrant communities.

Damian Lataan:
Falesteeni asks if the Americans will shoot anti-war protestors in America. Why not? It's not as though they haven't done it before. Remember Kent State University? 4 May 1970? Four unarmed students shot to death and nine others wounded by the Ohio National Guard?

madmankitchen:
We need a day of rage in america. our voice most be heard, its time!We need to protest the transfer of our wealth and jobs overseas. We need to protest all the wars our government start in our name. We need to protest the fact that people are starving in this country, going homeless, while we give our money away to rich bankers. We need to protest against the desecration of our constitution. It's time the government stop lying to us. Our voice will be heard. JUNE 30,2011. Washington D.C.

Falesteeni:
The 64 thousand GOLDEN RIAL Question, Will the Zionist Amerikkkans shoot their protesters if they were Armed insertion like we are witnessing in Libya?

Xavierin reply to Falesteeni:
Unfortunately, it is likely that they would shoot. America is run by and for corporations who are led by energy and the military industrial complex. The country is mostly asleep, but shows more signs of awakening than ever.

Bahrainis protest against Great Satan's Interference

Bahrainis to stage anti-US Friday sit-in

Bahrain's February 14 Movement has called for a mass sit-in in front of the US embassy in Manama to condemn Washington's interference in the internal affairs of the Persian Gulf country.

The spokesman of the Bahraini movement, Abdul Raouf al-Shayeb, said that the demonstrators intend to voice their opposition on Friday against the US support of the Al Khalifa regime.

The protesters seek to maintain the right to determine their own destiny, al-Shayeb added.

The main Bahraini opposition group, al-Wefaq, has also called for fresh rallies on Friday.

Al-Shayeb's remarks come as Saudi-backed Bahraini regime forces continue cracking down on peaceful demonstrators.

On Wednesday, the regime forces attacked the protesters in the village of Nuwaidrat, according to witnesses.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates deployed their first batch of military forces to Bahrain in mid-March.

On Saturday, Saudi Arabia deployed more forces in Bahrain in an attempt to further help the ruling regime clamp down on anti-regime demonstrators.

In June, a military court in Bahrain tried seven opposition activists including al-Shayeb in absentia for “plotting to overthrow the ruling system.” The opposition spokesman was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

Anti-regime protesters have been holding demonstrations across the country since mid-February, calling on the ruling family to relinquish power.

Scores of protesters have been killed -- many under torture -- and numerous others detained and transferred to unknown locations during the regime's brutal onslaught on protesters.

S Koreans protest US pollutant dumping

Wed Jul 27, 2011 3:49AM GMT

Hundreds of South Koreans have taken to the streets of the capital Seoul to protest against life-threatening pollution caused by the dumping of the chemical Agent Orange by US forces in 1978.

The protesters say that former US servicemen seeking medical support have admitted to dumping the toxic chemicals in South Korea's soil in 1978. The chemicals were the leftovers of those American forces used to kill and maim hundreds of thousands in Vietnam, a Press TV correspondent reported.

American sources have not confirmed discarding Agent Orange in the East Asian country.

South Koreans, however, suggest the US government is dragging its feet in investigating the case.

Following the demonstration, activists marched to Camp Carroll, the site of the alleged dumping, and demanded that the site be dug up.

Seoul said on Monday that it would examine the land that previously hosted American bases as the furor over the US forces' pollution of South Korea's environment widens.

Agent Orange is the code name for one of the herbicides and defoliants used by the US military as part of its herbicidal warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand, during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971.

Vietnam estimates that 400,000 people were killed or maimed, and 500,000 children born with birth defects as a result of the Agent Orange contamination.

I wish the Japanese people could stand up with one voice against the US oppression. This is a country with special breed of intelligent, loyal and hard working people. Yet all their efforts and achievements, could only get them going downhill. Because of the US strong gripped on their neck. They are proned to vomit everything into the US economic. So now as US is going down, it's dragging them along.

Redwood:
The US has used nuclear and chemical weapons of mass destruction. Wouldn't be surprised if they used biological weapons as well. That's probably what they do in all those secret CIA prisons. They know there is no Al Qaida because they invented it. I suspect the detainees are used as lab rats by some nasty scientists - probably Israeli. Life is stranger than fiction!

Khalid:
Where are people who cries in the Muslim world for crime against humanity, why can't they cry to bring these American's ( who were behind Vietnam genocide ) to justice.

What the MSM and including PressTV doesn't report is the fact that protesters usually vanish in Afghanistan, thousands are arrested without any charge by NATO and their puppets, mostly those who express their anger without using violence. More so, many villages have been wiped out by NATO terrorists because they oppose NATO occupation, not to mention hundreds of Afghan anti-occupation elders have been killed by NATO. PressTV needs to start using the term terrorism.
