Putin warns West on North Africa democracy-building

Putin warns West on North Africa democracy-building

By Darya Korsunskaya

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin cautioned the West Thursday that attempts to meddle in the rebellions of the Arab world may sweep extremists to power.

"You have to give people the chance to choose their own fates and their own futures," Putin said at a press conference with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

"Give them the opportunity to determine their own fate through natural means and not with any kind of outside interference," he said.

Putin warned that previous attempts to "impose democracy" had fostered Iran's Islamic revolution and triggered election victories for radicals that the West is now fighting to contain.

Russia has long rejected Western criticism of its own democratic credentials and treatment of political opponents.

"Not long ago at all, our partners came out actively for honest democratic elections in the Palestinian territories," Putin said.

With heavy sarcasm, he added: "Wonderful! Well done, lads! And it turns out Hamas wins, the same people you are calling a terrorist organisation and have started to fight against."

Hamas -- which does not recognise Israel and won U.S. and European Union-backed Palestinian Territory elections in 2006 -- seized control of Gaza 18 months later after fighting allies of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Russia also supported the elections, which were part of a Middle East road map for peace in the region.

Hamas has so far benefited from the wave of anti-government revolt sweeping Arab countries, strengthening its position while Israel and the Palestinian Authority have lost their key Arab ally, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Putin said Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had used the support of the West while living near Paris for a few months before he flew into Tehran in 1979 to lead the revolution that overthrew the Shah.

Russia's top leaders Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev have warned of the dangers of radical Islam gaining a grip in one of the most unstable and oil rich regions of the world.

"Regardless of the calming theories that radical groups coming to power in Northern Africa is unlikely, if it happens it cannot but spread to other areas of the world, including the North Caucasus," Putin said in Brussels.

The Kremlin is struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency in its predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region a decade after Moscow drove separatists from power in the second of two Chechen wars since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Unlike the relatively bloodless revolutions of Tunisia and Egypt, an uprising in Libya has sparked fierce fighting between pro-government forces and rebels. The unrest has driven world oil prices up to around $120 a barrel, stoking concern about the economic recovery.

US Seeks Backing for Libya Intervention

US Seeks Backing for Libya Intervention
Military Mulls Different Ways to Meddle in Uprising
by Jason Ditz, February 24, 2011

US diplomats are looking to drum up international support while the military is said to be looking at “all options” available for a possible military intervention into the Libyan Revolution, which at this point appears to be on the verge of ousting dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan confirmed that discussions are underway for different contingencies for military intervention in Libya, and that they are discussing a “full range of options” with possible allies, though he declined to get specific about what form this might take.

At the same time, President Obama has been in talks playing up the violent crackdown by Gadhafi and seeking to gather sufficient international support for a possible intervention.

Though clearly the massive death tolls in Libya have shocked the world, it seems a prospective invasion is very much “after the fact” at this point, as Gadhafi’s regime appears to have minimal ability to launch operations outside of the immediate area around Tripoli anymore, and even this city appears on the brink of falling to the increasingly well organized opposition.

At this point, with the regime clearly on the way out, the intervention could only be seen as meddling by the resurgent opposition, and the inevitable US demands on how the post-Gadhafi government might be run would be bound to provoke anti-US resentment in the region, and ensure that the country (as with other US-occupied nations) will remain unstable long after the ouster of their former regime.

Libya: the rest of the story

24.02.2011

Libyan opposition literally running protests from Washington.

by Tony Cartalucci

Please note the "EnoughGaddafi.com" signs. EnoughGaddafi.com's
webmaster is listed on the US State Department's Movements.org as
the "Twitter" to follow.

When Qaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, accused foreigners and opposition groups of formenting unrest within Libya, it appears no truer words have been spoken. It is not surprising BBC and the rest of the corporate owned media went through extensive measures to discredit his speech.

Unbelievable revelations have been discovered regarding the unrest in Libya. The leader of Libya's opposition group organizing the protests both inside and outside of Libya, is currently in Washington D.C. as he and his organization direct the upheaval and bedlam consuming the North African nation.

An interview with Ibrahim Sahad of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya (NFSL) on ABC Australia, features every talking point covered by the mainstream corporate media from over the past week, all with the White House and Washington Monument looming over him in the background.

Sahad echos the Soros/Brzezinski International Crisis Group calls for the UNSC to convene and discuss intervening in Qaddafi's defiance.

Ibrahim Sahad and his NFLS formed the National Conference of the Libyan Opposition (NCLO) in London in 2005. This group specifically went out of its way to appear not to be influenced or supported by the United States. Perhaps to cement this notion, Huffington Post featured documents released by the NCLO in a wikileaks-esque move to pin US support on Qaddafi. Of course, as with all the unrest in the Middle East, as the facts trickle out we find out this is not to avoid confusion, it is to avoid the truth.

The Sahad's NCLO began organizing the February 17th "Day of Rage" right on cue as Egypt fell so the mainstream media apparatus could swing around and put the focus on Libya. Conveniently, the media needs only move from Cairo to Egypt's western border and wait for Sahad's men on the ground to secure them a base of operations, presumably in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi. Qaddafi apparently understands the role of NGOs and the foreign media, which is why they are not in the streets of Libya's cities, and coverage has been admittedly daunting.

It turns out that both the corporate owned news and the US State Department/corporate funded Movements.org are getting their reports entirely from Sahad's NCLO in Washington, who claims to be in contact with "first hand" reports out of Libya. Other NFSL members including one in Dubai, are also supplying the media with this "first hand" information. These reports have become the basis for accusations of "genocide", the convening of the UNSC, economic sanctions, threats directed toward Libyan security forces that attempt to quell protesters, and NATO enforced no-fly zones.

The Neo-Con infested National Endowment for Democracy and its army of US funded NGOs recently made an official statement urging the US and EU to confront the Libyan "massacres" in the UNSC and Human Rights Council. This is still amidst reports BBC admits are "impossible to verify," based on information coming from Movements.org and a Washington based Libyan protester leader.

It should also be noted that a Ghonim-esque Libyan blogger is being reported by US corporate funded Movements.org as a "Twitter user to follow." He goes by the name "EnoughGaddafi" and is the webmaster of LibyaFeb17.com. EnoughGaddafi's work can also be found archived on Washington based Ibrahim Sahad's NFSL site (EnoughGaddafi.com was hacked according to Movements.org).

Again we are told the protests are spontaneous, inspired by the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings. Again we are told it is the youth yearning for freedom and "democracy." But when we look behind the curtain, we see yet another old man from Washington pulling the levers, blowing the smoke, and flashing the lights.

If you are religious, pray for the people in the streets of Libya, many of whom may be merely swept up in this cruel hoax. The US and their stooges will only be disheartened if their plot doesn't succeed. The rivers of blood that will flow to ensure that it does is never entered into their calculations.

When your US State Department sponsored "liberation" comes to you, you will hope others elsewhere will stand in solidarity with the truth, not the emotions of an engineered hoax. You will hope others take it upon themselves to speak the truth amongst the deafening din of corporate media propaganda. So spread the word, wake your neighbors up, and most importantly, boycott the corporations whose greed drives this agenda and whose members are planning and carrying it out.

Do it for the Libyans, the Egyptians, the Tunisians, and do it for yourself. The conflagration is consuming the Middle East and North Africa now, it may consume you next.

Fidel Castro′s Reflections: The Cynical Dance Macabre

PRENSA LATINA:

Escrito por Ileana Ferrer Fonte

25 de febrero de 2011, 08:33Havana, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) "The Cynical Dance Macabre" is the title of the most recent reflection by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

Prensa Latina is posting below the full text of Fidel Castro's reflection.

REFLECTIONS BY COMRADE FIDEL

THE CYNICAL DANCE MACABRE

(Translation provided by ESTI)

The policy of plunder imposed by the United States and their NATO allies in the Middle East has gone into a crisis. It has inevitably unraveled with the high cost of grain, the effects of which can be felt more forcefully in the Arab countries where, in spite of their huge resources of oil, the shortage of water, areas covered by desert and the generalized poverty of the people contrast with the enormous resources coming from the oil possessed by the privileged sectors.

While food prices triple, real estate fortunes and the treasures of the aristocratic minority reach millions of millions of dollars.

The Arab world, mainly Muslim in its culture and beliefs, has seen itself additionally humiliated by the imposition of blood and fire by a State that was not capable of fulfilling the basic obligations that were part of their origin, from the colonial order existing up to the end of WW II, by virtue of which the victorious powers created the United Nations Organization and imposed world trade and economy.

Thanks to the treason committed by Anwar El-Sadat at Camp David, the Palestinian State has not been able to exist, despite the UN treaties of November 1947, and Israel became a strong nuclear power, an ally of the United States and NATO.

The US Military Industrial Complex supplied Israel with tens of billions of dollars every year as well as to the very Arab States that were submitted and being humiliated by Israel.

The genie has escaped from the bottle and NATO doesn′t know how to control it.

They are going to attempt to wrest the most benefits from the regrettable events in Libya. Nobody can know at this moment what is happening over there. All the figures and versions, even the most implausible ones, have been spread by the empire via the mass media, sowing chaos and disinformation.

It is obvious that inside Libya a civil war is brewing. Why and how did this happen? Who will pay the consequences? Reuters Agency, echoing the opinion of the well-known Nomura Bank of Japan, stated that oil prices could go beyond any limits:

“‘If Libya and Algeria suspend oil production, prices could reach a maximum of more than 220 dollars a barrel and OPEC′s inactive capacity would be reduced to 2.1 million barrels per day, similar to levels seen during the Gulf War and when values touched 147 dollars a barrel in 2008’, the bank asserted in an article."

Who could pay that price these days? What would be the consequences in the midst of the food crisis? The main NATO leaders are all worked up. British Prime Minister David Cameron, ANSA informed, "...admitted in a speech in Kuwait that the western nations made a mistake in backing non-democratic governments in the Arab world." One has to congratulate him on his frankness.

His French colleague Nicolas Sarkozy stated: "The extended brutal and bloody repression of the Libyan civilian population is disgusting".

Italian Chancellor Franco Frattini stated as “‘believable’ the figure of one thousand dead in Tripoli [...] ‘the tragic numbers shall be a bloodbath’.”

Hillary Clinton stated the following: “…the ‘bloodbath’ is ‘completely unacceptable’ and ‘it has to stop’…”

Ban Ki-moon spoke: “‘The use of violence in the country is absolutely unacceptable’.”

“...‘the Security Council will act according to whatever the international community decides’.” “‘We are considering a series of options’.”

What Ban Ki-moon is really hoping is that Obama pronounces the last word.

The president of the United States spoke this Wednesday afternoon and stated that the Secretary of State would be leaving for Europe in order to agree with their NATO allies on the measures to be taken. On his face once could note the opportunity to spar with John McCain, the far-right-wing Republican senator, pro-Israel Senator Joseph Lieberman from Connecticut and the leaders of the Tea Party, in order to ensure the Democratic Party demands.

The empire′s mass media has prepared the terrain for action. There would be nothing strange about a military intervention in Libya; besides, with that, Europe would be guaranteed almost two million barrels of light oil per day, unless before that events would put an end to the leadership or the life of Gaddafi.

Anyway, Obama′s role is rather complicated. What will the reaction of the Arab and Muslim world be if blood should flow in abundance in that country as a result of that exploit? Would NATO intervention in Libya stem the revolutionary tidal wave surging in Egypt?

In Iraq, the innocent blood of more than a million Arab citizens was spilt when the country was invaded under false pretexts. Mission accomplished!: proclaimed George W. Bush.

Nobody in the world would ever agree with the deaths of defenseless civilians in Libya or anywhere else. And I wonder: will the US and NATO apply that principle on the defenseless civilians that the unmanned Yankee planes and the soldiers of that organization kill every day in Afghanistan and Pakistan?

It is a cynical dance macabre.

If Libya suspends oil production, this will the very welcome moment for the WESTERN FOURTH REICH to move in and take over those oil fields under the pretext of bringing "democracy" and "nation-building" to those poor, mentally disturbed Libyans.

In the Third Reich NAZI officers danced in Auschwitz, Dachau and other places of death camps, while prisoners were killed.

I can imagine that Western Fourth Reich officers will have no problems dancing, while Libyans are killed.

That is the special DEATH POLKA, a DANCE MACABRE of assassins.
