Labour camps were set up during the early Mao years to "re-educate rightists and counter-revolutionaries."

Nowadays, these camps are used as penitentiaries, but not only for people convicted of major crimes, also others such as unlicensed street-hawkers, prostitutes etc, in other words, " undesirable elements". Inmates are allegedly forced to do physical labour 14 to 15 hours a day, a rather harsh regime.

China now wants a public debate on whether it should close the labour camps.

Unfortunately, Beijing only wants either a yeah or a nay with nothing in between.

I think labour camps should be used to house criminals convicted of serious crimes such as murder, 1st degree man-slaughter, drug smuggling and peddling, corrupt politicians and civil servants etc. They should expiate their debt to society through hard work.

The small offenders such as unlicensed street hawkers, prostitutes etc, don't choose to become what they are, circumstances made them what they are. They can be re-integrated with society as law-abiding citizens.

You forgot: petitioners.

They have the "right to work", that is why labor camps are good for them.

up for first two posts.

more appropriate way to punish murderers and corrupt officials,
let them pay what they did to society, rather than just giving an end.
wrongly convicted can not be brought back from death and compensated,
if belately proven innocent, but for real murderers, just death is not enough either.
also eases negative attention on the number.

A global company listed on Taiwan Stock Exchange which allegedly treated its employees badly, driving some to suicide. Many in its management are educated and trained in the West.

Are you suggesting that Taiwanese companies are like labour camps or are you suggesting that all western companies treat their employees decently ?

Your point being... ?

And its relevance to the discussion on hand... ?
