It may or may not turn out to be true, but one U.S. publication’s report about the possible cancellation of an American fighter jet program is being seized on by Chinese media as evidence of the Asian giant’s growing military prowess.

An article appearing on Monday on the websites of the state-run People’s Daily as well as its popular tabloid the Global Times describes comments made by one U.S. analyst on future weapons purchases as the all-but-guaranteed stance of the Obama administration. The comments, which first appeared last week on the website of a niche defense publication, suggested the U.S. might rethink its purchase of the long-anticipated F-35 fighter jet due in part to rapid advancements in China’s military.

Andrew Krepinevich, president of the non-partisan Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, was described as saying plans for the long-anticipated F-35 could diminish as the defense systems of potential U.S. adversaries, such as China, have improved more rapidly than the fighter jet’s development.

On Monday, the website of the People’s Daily, a mouthpiece for the Communist Party, reported the Obama administration was reconsidering its purchase of the fighter jets as a result of “astonishing progress” by militaries of China and other potential U.S. adversaries.

While the Chinese media describe Krepinevich as a member of a think tank, the articles legitimize his praise of the Chinese military by saying his comments would likely receive “close attention from the Pentagon.” In China today, research institutions free from the government’s stamp are rare, and comments made by researchers on sensitive issues are often regarded as a sanctioned point of view.

Krepinevich is well-known in Washington and a frequent commentator on U.S. military strategy, but he does not speak for the administration, and it’s not clear his comments reflect the views of anyone inside it. His comments haven’t yet turned up widely in other U.S. press, either.

China is in the middle of developing plans to use the press as a purveyor of a softer image abroad for the party, but this kerfuffle suggests a lack of precision in state-run press will continue to curb its effectiveness.

The state-run Xinhua news agency is key to that effort. For example, the agency is in the process of finalizing a deal to move its North American headquarters to a gleaming office in News York’s Times Square.

“Xinhua’s move into Times Square basically signals a new era in which they want to become a global player,” Rus Leong, an adjunct professor of Asian-American Studies at the University of California-Los Angeles, said of Xinhua’s expansion. “China is realizing in the global arena that soft power is as important as hard power.”

Whether that translates into greater accuracy for the state-run media is yet to be seen.

It is also true that America like many other countries do no need a fighter to fight China. It is objectively not tomorrow that there will be a military confrontation between USA and China, even if it's a favorite fantasm of the young xenophobic dumbs like those on this forum. USA, like many other countries, need light tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, transportation planes. Heavy bombers or mach 3 capable figthers are no need no. For next 30 years at least.  Look England or France in Afghanistan: Both have heavy tank inherited form cold war planification (Leclerc and Challenger) but useless there. They lack and need badly helicopters.

For resumming: there is a BIG lack between wary dumbs fantasm and serious military analisys...

For Draken:

It's the extremes of cost, Draken [Size=-4](USD 150 Million per is hefty) coupled with the inefficiency as an air superiority jet fighter will be the thing that'll shorten the F-35's lifespan if not cancelled altogether.  These two variables makes for the make or breaks of the longevity of weapon systems such as the F-35 and AV-8 unless it can be produced cheaply dime a dozen that is... economics dictates all -- it controls everything in life -- yes, it even dictates the limits of a nation to defend itself.

And, mark my words, Draken, as time goes on, even the Raptor will be junked and the landmark teen series of American fighters like the "F-15 Silent Eagle" will make for the standard weapon system of the USAF in next foreseeable 50 years to come.

By such a time, UAV or pilotless platforms, i.e., Boeing's X-45 and, China's   Flash: http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2007/10/17/218683/chinas-dark-sword-unmanned-combat-air-vehicle-programme-raises.html  ...

Putin's a killer. This was the claim made by Fox News journalist; Bill O'Reilly during his recent interview with Donald Trump. Trump's reply came in the form of a simple question. What, you think our country's so innocent?

The future, Draken. Pilotless fighter systems -- not UAV's...

Here's Russia's version (almost an exact copy so to speak) of Boeing's X-35.   Flash: http://junshi.daqi.com/slide/2923404.html  Both these systems (Russian and American) are likely way way less costly to built than a regular fighter like an F-16 or an Su, probably at roughly the cost of a cruise missile hence [expendable] -- definitely a cost advantage over other regular jet fighters.

These two systems (American and Russian) are still not top notch however because both are subsonic hence easy to engage and shoot down by even a K-8 hence speed becomes its weakness.

China's Dark Sword and another similar platform however holds and edge over the competition because it's not only supersonic, in fact it's said to be hypersonic and -- it supercruises at height which is a prerequisite of the PLAAF for any future Chinese fighter system regardless if J-12/14/J-XX or whatever.

Disposable chopsticks, though not as fancy as the regular one's, have always been the choice of consumers... I mean imagine the guy who takes care of the dishes at McDonald's if the chain didn't serve their coffee in paper cups ...

UAV hijack system would have a wonderful time!

but UAV's has advantage of "taking out the human factor", making the craft more manouvreable!
BUT WHAT ABOUT HIJACK by opponent cyber systems?
