The Changjiang (Yangtze) dolphin, Baiji, were extinct in 2006.

Now the finless porpoises which inhabits the same Changjiang river are going to disappear too.

China has pride herself with countless natural resources and assets not found anywhere else on Earth.

It has defended the survival of panda, antelope, tiger and black bear. It now has to put more effort to keep the unique porpoises from disappearing.

When I was in Jiangnan in May, I watched an animal rescue programme on CCTV 10. I realized that these efforts were mostly committed by the government. Social groups for the cause are rare.

The extinction of finless porpoises would be a great loss.
