Apart from the rather patronising verdict on the electorates they said all these things before after about 38 recessions and the biggest war the world has ever seen.

China got rich from export markets on the back of cheap labour.

But it wont stay like that for ever there will be some rebalancing.  We had slave labour here once upon a time but unions gradually improved the lot of the working classes, when they went too far the public booted them out.  China will go in a similar direction REGARDLESS of the regime.

When the Capitalists go too far they invite the left back in and it goes on like that ad infinitum.

Democracy?

Probably what is most important is to have the people content. It appears that a large number of people in China are content with their oligarchy. To the degree that these people are wise and good it is an effective method of governing. In Oman the King is a very benevolent monarch. He does a great deal for his people. Neither of these systems is a democracy. The advantage of a democracy seems to be that the people are relatively content since they chose their leaders. The disadvantage seems to be that people want the power that comes in legislatures and executives in any government. If we look at the US in order to get into the powerful positions the people running for office commonly er souls to lobbyists and interest groups so they can be elected. This leads to a government run by special interests and not for the electorate. Plato was right in proposing that the educated people run the government and not be beholden to those who could enrich them. Whether it is a monarchy or an oligarchy or a  democratic republic, it can be no better than the ethical level of the people in charge.

the fact is, IT WORKS ...

as long as you can keep the army of "slaves" in check.

If not ...

Good night Santa Maria.

The "WEST" has to worry about financial speculations ...

CHINA has to worry about "social stability and loyalty" ...

I am not sure which of the worries is the more worse one.

To judge which system is better is not only premature, but also not fair.

For sure during the time of the Roman Empire, the Romans considered themselves as the "superior system".

But did they ask their million of slaves what they think about it ?
