Isn't the language of the Zhuang related to Dai/Thai (Northern Thai)? This language is alive and far from extinction.

Most Chinese people can speak more than one dialect.  My parents can speak 4 dialects.  Mandarin is only native to Beijing people - who used to be manchurian.  And Mandarin is also closely related to Tibetan.

T  b   belongs to the Sino - T  b  group of languages. It's an own language and no dialect and a damned complicated one. There are vast differences (dialects) within the T  b  language , depending on which part of the plateau people come from.

The relation to Putonghua is distant and not closer than Thai is to Putonghua.
