seneca, Chinese students of English learn much more about English grammar than their counterparts who speack English as first language. The former are deficient only in their exposure to and life experience in the target language environment. Once they get there, such as when they join a school or college in America, their English flourishes. And of course, the younger joiners will tend to develop stronger English language skills. The latter, on the other hand, have little to brag about, growing up and getting an education in their native country. And many of them still struggle with their own grammar by the time they go to college.

That's why most colleges in America have to make freshmen go through reading and writing remedial courses to teach those students how to write properly in English...

Reply # 75 - For seneca - Knowledge as a Foundation of Learning

seneca, one probably doesn't have to know where is Iraq, despite the fact of all those things that have been going on in that country all these years. And one doesn't have to know lots of other things, too, including the history of one's own country.

However, if a general education in modern times is reduced to being so easy-going and forgiving in terms of what is the required core knowledge that a student has to learn, that would be a major failure for any education.

And what is the difference if a Chinese speaking student is curious about Issac Newton and Charles Darwin and if an English speaking student knows little about them?

Reply #68 - For larrydu - The Purpose of Education

Thanks for the comments, larrydu. You raised interesting questions regarding the purpose of education nowadays. That is, should modern education be geared toward training up a wholelistic citizen, or toward job training? Here are some thoughts:

First, a modern general education is not the same as apprenticeship or job training in oldern times. That seems to be recognized by all nations concerned.

Second, the modern day elementary and secondary level education is designed as a general education (not job training) where students are supposed to acquire a core knowledge in order to function as a modern citizen. This core knowledge will reflect the best knowledge accumulated so far in human civilization and will teach the student regarding their own nation's and the world's history and culture.

Third, the distinction between higher education and vocational training starts at the post secondary level, not before it. Students receiving general education shoud be held to the same standard of academic performance, whatever their future career plans would be.

Fourth, China's challenge is not to reduce the contents of curriculum (in fact, China's schools teach about the same amount of contents as the other South East Asian nations), but for educators to inspire more imagination and creativity and critical thinking on the part of students.

Fifth, teacher trainings should be vastly reformed and improved regarding teaching methodology, so teachers will be better are challenging, motivating, and inspiring students in class.

Sixth, more opportunities should be created for students to do internship, community services or projects to enable them to relate their learning to real life and market needs. In fact, students can qualify for graduation only when they have complete a substancial amount of internship and community work.

I am devastated by the destruction of Chinese K-12 education system by Westernization.

Obviously, textbooks are watered down like in the dumb US. Chinese Children no longer find school interest ...

wrong butt2,

the text has always sucked. the students are just wanting more out of life, and are rebelling more against their parents and teachers all the time. the math sucks

it not only sucks, but its useless

you arent really interested in solutions, only in making random threads which attack america out of any subject you happen to stumble upon

however, to hijack your dumbass thread and make something useful out of it, something beyond your capability, let me go ahead and offer real solutions to a real problem, both of which are beyond your capacity to be genuinely concerned with

Math doesnt need to be written my scientists or by educators, but by "system administrators" and "programmers"

the 'programmer' or 'system administrator' needs to look at the needs of the system, and divide schools into core subject areas,

Grades K-3 will learn very basic core subjects, such as:

construction, engineering, and problem-solving via building blocks and puzzles,

creativity via drawing,  painting, sculpting, crafts, cookery, etc

human empathy, caring , welfare, and service, via biology and anatomy and helping, health, welfare, and parenting issues

science and robotics via assembly and understanding basic components and parts

chemistry and physics using basic experience.

each student is carefully observed and given scores according to both his or her INTEREST AND ABILITY

then, graded 5-6 will be divided into specialized schools throughout the district, such as:

construction and engineering and problem-solving school

Creative arts and ideas technology school

Humanity school

Electronic Science and Robotics schools

Chemistry, Physics, and other schools

then grades 7-9 will be further divided into sub categories and even smaller, more specialized schools.

and so will grades 10-12 be even more specialized

a child who tested into humanity in K-3 will have up to 50 different schools to choose from in his or her career, but none of them will be any other discipline other than those related to humanity, such as health care, nutrition, sports, fitness, Chinese medicine, Medical, Dental, Psychology, Nursing, Service & Tourism Industry, Massage therapy, mid-wife, Cruise Ship captain, Airplane Pilot, etc..

each school will send him to the next school based on his OBSERVED INTEREST AND ABILITY, rather than on his verbal opinion

and by grade 12, each student will be qualified for a very select few universities tailoring to students from that discipline.

so the only math anyone will learn, or the only anything anyone will learn, is whatever they are interested in, and wish to train in and be qualified to apply and use in an industry, in real-world working applications

I can understand why SS does not cherish memory. After a few beers, he remembers nothing anyways.
