Well, I agree

I think that Billy Sing should have been played by an Australian with Chinese heritage.

TV and Film history is littered with "substitutions" like this.
There was a TV series in the 1970s  where the part of a part Aboriginal tracker was played by a New Zealander (despite a thorough search, no suitable actor could be found in Australia)
I saw a TV show from Kenya , a few years back, where an Oxford educated Englishman was played by an African in "whiteface".

Not all cases are acts of racism, however the nepotism in the case cited by the OP, would seem to indicate other forces at work.

I agree

It should have been played by a Chinese for a lot of reasons

But the director gave the role to his son, I heard. Bet he regrets that move.

Easily, a good Western movie showing a Chinese hero figure kicking @ss, especially a war movie, is going to rake in tons of money. Especially an Aussie Chinese, for Aussie Chinese audiences, who definitely want to hear about great Aussie Chinese.

This is not "whiting out" of anything. It is just a dumb move by the director. Yet, it is tiresome to respond to journalists' histrionics. The only reason they say words like this is attention-seeking. Quite gay really
