this is the context:

大致同意你的判断，我对语法已经忘得差不多，但是从语感和上下文来说，我感觉是不是would have preferred 用得不太恰当？或者很少有人这样使用，一般都说people would have preferred not to buy Toyota veicle.

上面理解错了。distinction 是反讽话，指 the first "Do-Not-Buy" rating that Consumer Reports has issued in nearly ten years。丰田当然不想获得这个“殊荣”啦！
