At least China has so many historical, cultural, and blood ties with Tibet and Taiwan - the same cannot be said for Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Puerto Rico, etc...

Very interesing discussion.

I also find this appology by the US government...

Apology Bill - Public Law 103-150

In the Congress of the United States
Congressional Record, Vol. 139 (1993)
October 27, 1993 - Considered and passes the Senate
November 17, 1993 - Considered and passes the House of Representative
November 23, 1993 - Signed into law by President William J. Clinton

To acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the January 17, 1893 overthrow
of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and to offer an apology to Native Hawaiians
on behalf of the United States for the overthrow of the Kingdom of
Hawaii.

Would the majority of Hawaiians today vote to leave the US?

Probably not, because as others have said they are now very economically dependent on the US. That doesn't mean that the Hawaiian people have a great love for the US and it's ways.

Their sovereignty was taken away from them and they were never given the choice to get it back. There was a vote and they were given the choice to remain a US territory or become a state. They chose to become a state and that way they were given more rights. But they were never given the choice to become an independent sovereign state as they were originally.

I think the US won't give them that choice because they don't want to risk losing their precious military bases in Hawaii. When the US criticizes China over Taiwan and Tibet they are being hypocritical. It's not surprising because they are hypocritical in many ways and don't seem to be able to see it.

I think everyone should get over this nationalist bullzhti.
Names for the dirt we live on are just names.
We should respect the cultural history of people who live in one place or another
And hold dear the ancestry and rites that were there before us.

Too much time has been lost in this bickering over borders
Let's just get on with being human and spend less time aruing over who owns what.

My father's family hasn't had a home country since the 19th century, only a place to live.
The aboriginals in Oz are dispossessed living in their own land
The "races" of the world are intermingled in many countries, hopefully for the better and despite having different cultures, histories and beliefs.

Time to work together for humanity, not for land
