Report to signal thaw in China, Japan ties

China and Japan are expected to release in Tokyo today a joint report that acknowledges Japan's invasion of China during the Second World War - a document that analysts said was a positive start to removing a long-standing irritant in bilateral ties.

The report, featuring 13 articles by Chinese historians and an equal number by their Japanese counterparts, is likely to cover historical and contemporary relations between the two nations, a source close to the compilers of the report told China Daily yesterday.

Historians on both sides are agreed on the fact that Japan invaded China, the source said, but due to wide differences, the report may not cover post-war history. "Research will continue on that part," the source said.

The report is also expected to touch upon events such as the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, during which, China says, Japanese invaders slaughtered 300,000 civilians in the city.

The report, which will record views from both sides in case of disagreements, is the result of discussions spread over three years among 30 historians from the China-Japan Joint History Research Committee.

from the actual report, it stated:

"Yoshikazu, however, cautioned that the report could arouse opposition from Japan's right-wingers."

i would say we need to let them talk, as that's the voice that america has been suppress and the chinese american pets most afraid to hear -- of how the anti-chinese factions of chiang and wang ching wei have been fighting to keep the foreign interests in china, against the peasant army of mao.

japan needs to tell us what happened in the yellow river flooding in the ensuing spring, which according to a mr. white of times magazine, caused 30 million to starve.  but chiang soong meiling suppressed his report to just that of a famine.  this flood happened in the area where the commanding general tang came, henan province.  it must v been used by chiang kai shek to cover his bloody trail.

japan needs to release all documentations on this yellow river flooding, as well as any possible agreement/negotiation that chiang had with them regarding the invasion of nanking.  fex, why the japanese surrounded the city while invading?  were they contracted to round up all the soldiers beforehand?

Hopefully it will turn out amicably for both parties and thus close the chapter once and for all.

There are still differences about recent history. The main bone of contention is the Nanjing massacre of end 1937, early 1938. Both sides agreed that there are historical gaps. Historians from both sides also agreed to include views on the numbers of victims in their report.

Kitaoka Shinichi, who heads the Japanese side, said that they have made some progress in promoting historical understanding between the two countries, although many problems remain unresolved.

He stressed the need to continue joint research to promote mutual understanding, while the leader of the Chinese side, Bu Ping, said at least the first step has been taken.

Indeed Japan needs to acknowledge things like the Nanjing m@ss@cre of 300,000 innocent Chinese people.

China also should acknowledge the deaths of over 100 times the Nanjing figure, innocent Chinese people who were victims of failed policies and deliberate oppression by M@o's authorities during the GLF and the CR.

Emu,

I'm not 100% sure but believe that China and Japan do not disagree on the GLF and the CR. Western figures are considered grossly inflated by many Japanese historians. There are however differences on the events of 1.  9.  8.  9.
