The generation gap is a popular term used to describe differences between people of a younger generation and their elders, especially between a child and his or her parent's generation. The term first became popularized in Western countries during the 1960s and described the cultural differences between the young and their parents.

Although some generational differences have existed throughout history, because of more rapid cultural change during the modern era differences between the two generations increased in comparison to previous times, particularly with respect to such matters as musical tastes, fashion, culture and politics. This may have been magnified by the unprecedented size of the young generation during the 1960s, which gave it unprecedented power, and willingness to rebel against societal norms.

Gaps exist everywhere, not just between the young and old generations.  Take a family. The young one starts as a baby nurtured and protected by the parent. As the baby grows to teen, s/he develops an independent streak which presumably is a biological mechanism to prepare the teen for a life on her or his own. However the parent who has aged somewhat still has that concern for the baby now turned teen. Naturally enough the teen will see the concern as pressure or control which then results in conflict.

Similarly, the parent was a teen to the grandparent. As the parent has become adult, the grandparent transfers the concern to the grandchild. But the parent remains concerned for the grandparent in much the same way as she or he would remain concerned for the grandchild.  Possibly the grandparent has become slower in reflexes which can create exasperation in the parent especially when the parent sees stubbornness also coming out.

So there can be two generation gaps between three generations in the same family.

What with age generation gaps one can transpose too to income generation gaps....but that's another story....
