We use "the" with a singular countable noun to talk about a type of thing.

Examples:

The computer was invented in the 20th Century. -- not a particular computer
The computer in my office is broken. -- a particular one
The crocodile is very dangerous. -- this type of animal
The crocodile in the river is very big. -- a particular one
She plays the piano. -- not a particular piano but this type of instrument
The piano she is playing is very old. -- a particular one

只有C,其他的选择都是错误的。
A:“A umbrella“ A摆在母音的前面是扯中的扯
“An umbrella was invented" 等于“某某人发明了一把伞“一样不行

"Umbrella was invented"是中式的英语。这样的句子没有article(a,an,the)限用于主语是名字。例如:"Microsoft was founded", 有的句型也可以用复数,不过,invented不行,因为发明雨伞的人不是发明很多种雨伞,而是发明雨伞这个东西。

"The umbrella was invented" 看jl2315 的正确解释

表示种类的也可以用a/an加单数名词..怎么解释?伞的第一个字母是发辅音的,哎.,请进一步解释.

是半元音。不是辅音。用an。
ivystill is right.

An umbrelllar was invented by chinese ...

a/an 表示一种类型。不是一个,俩个。指伞这种东西。

多向ivy请教就可以。

These are all informative discussions. Not surprisingly, I support JL (and myself ). The way "the" and "a" or "an" are used to express a category of things are different. For example, "A cat purrs" is essentially the same thing as"All cats purr". In this case, you are telling people, purring is a generic behavior of cats. Notice, if you change the tense to, say, the past tense, the meaning is changed from describing a generic behavior to a specific instance. "A cat purred" describes one particular event that happened. Therefore, if you say "An umbrella was made," it refers to a specific event that one particular umbrella was made. Of course, if you change "made" to "invented", it would not make sense as "invention" refers to the concept, the function, and other properties of a generic umbrella (in other words, all umbrellas) rather than a specific umbrella.
