What can you buy for a dollar/pound/yuan/euro  where you live?
In beijing, I can buy a cup of watered-down soybean milk or a steamed stuffed bun or a bus ticket or a bottle of water............

Interesting question. We are both Chinese, and I will think up other things that 1 yuan can afford:

1. A bus ticket in Guangzhou (usually 2 yuan, 1 yuan is for those without air-conditioners and tv.)
2. Being allowed to use the computer in an internet bar for half an hour.
3. Buying a small bottle of mineral water (not a brand)
4. A small pack of preserved pickle, or salt, or instant noodles...
5. maybe one bar of ice-lolly.

others:  a newspaper,  a notebook, a pencil
a small pack of tissue, a tea-leaf egg, a small bowl of rice, ...
