Six men jailed over paedophile ring
Thursday, June 11, 2009

Six men have been jailed for their involvement in a paedophile ring.

The men - who were handed sentences ranging from two to 17 years - were part of what is believed to be Scotland's biggest child pornography and abuse network.

Ross Webber, 27, of North Berwick, Craig Boath, 24, from Dundee, Colin Slaven, 24, from Edinburgh, and John Milligan, 40, Neil Campbell, 46, and John Murphy, 44, all from Glasgow, were sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Civil servant Milligan received the longest custodial sentence of all six men, amounting to 17 years behind bars.

Insurance worker Boath was jailed for nine years and nine months, while bank teller Webber was locked up for eight years and nine months.

IT worker Slaven was jailed for three years, cake firm manager Campbell was ordered to spend three years and four months behind bars and Murphy, a receptionist in a sauna, was jailed for two years.

Two other members of the gang, sex offender Neil Strachan, 41, and youth worker James Rennie, 38, will be sentenced at a later date for more serious charges - including the abuse of a three-month-old baby.

The eight men, traced through their sordid internet chats, were found guilty last month after a 10-week trial.

Nearly 125,000 indecent images were seized during Operation Algebra, which uncovered the group, believed to be Scotland's biggest paedophile network.

Webber, Boath and Milligan were also found guilty of conspiring to participate in the sexual abuse of children, as were Strachan and Rennie.

Trucker jailed for girl's abduction
Thursday, June 11, 2009

A lorry driver who had sex with a 15-year-old girl he met in an internet chatroom before taking her to France has been jailed for five years.

Robert Williams, 49, of Glebe Road, Whitburn, Scotland, was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court after earlier pleading guilty to child abduction and sexual activity with a child.

The court was told Williams was on bail at the time of the incident in January this year after a complaint about a similar incident involving another teenage girl.

Williams was arrested in late 2008 after he met a 16-year-old girl on the internet and travelled from Scotland to Sussex to meet her, before booking into a hotel where the pair had sex.

He was interviewed and bailed in connection with the incident, the court heard.

But just weeks later, Williams arranged to meet the "naive" and "vulnerable" teenager in this case and took her from her home in north east Lincolnshire on January 14.

Williams and the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, travelled by train from Grimsby to Doncaster and then on to London, where they booked into a hotel room and twice had unprotected sex.

The next day they travelled to France on a ferry from Dover and were found a week after disappearing, on January 21, when they went to the British Consulate in Lille. Staff at the Consulate contacted police and Williams was arrested and later extradited to the UK.

Sentencing Williams, Judge David Tremberg described him as a "sexual predator".

He said the case was "troubling" coming so soon after his previous arrest, even though charges were never brought on that occasion.

Priest sent sexual texts to teenage follower

Thursday, June 11, 2009

A priest has been barred from holding a licence after he admitted sending "sexual and intimate" text messages to a teenage parishioner.

The Church in Wales placed the indefinite restriction upon the Rev David Waters after his suspension as Rector of St Catwg's Church in Gelligaer, south Wales, in June 2007.

Mr Waters was made subject to an internal investigation after allegations were made about him sending messages to a female parishioner. As she was 16 at the time and therefore over the age of consent, South Wales Police did not investigate.

Before his tribunal last October, Mr Waters resigned from all posts within the church. At the tribunal, Mr Waters admitted through his solicitor that on several occasions before the end of May 2007 he sent "inappropriate text messages, in that they contained words or phrases that were unseemly and of a sexual and intimate nature".

The tribunal summary added: "He further accepted that such conduct was scandalous and offensive." His solicitor claimed he was suffering from a mental illness at the time.

In November 2007, a few months after his suspension, Mr Waters told the Merthyr Express newspaper he had lost his faith and suffered a mental breakdown and as a result could no longer carry out his clergy duties.

Although he has not been defrocked, the ban means if Mr Waters wishes to apply for a licence or obtain permission to officiate in any Diocese of the Church in Wales again, he must provide written medical evidence that he is not at risk of repeat behaviour.

It will then be up to the individual bishop to decide whether to grant such a licence or permission.

A statement from the Church in Wales said: "The Rev David Waters was referred to the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Church in Wales, in respect of an allegation of conduct giving just cause for scandal or offence committed during his time as an incumbent in the Parish of Gelligaer.

"Having admitted the offence, Mr Waters has been inhibited from holding a licence or obtaining permission to officiate in any Diocese in the Church in Wales.

"The Tribunal recognised that at the time of his offences, the Rev David Waters was suffering from a form of mental illness and the inhibition will remain in force unless and until he provides to a bishop written medical opinion that he is no longer at risk of repeat behaviour, at which stage it would be for the individual bishop to determine the grant of such licence or permission."

Pope outraged by Irish Priests’ Sex Scandal

Pope Outraged By Irish Priests' Sex Scandal

9:43am UK, Saturday December 12, 2009
Andy Jack, Sky News Online
The Pope has said he is "deeply disturbed and distressed" by the sexual abuse of children by priests in Ireland.

He said he shared the betrayal and shame felt by Irish Catholics after meeting senior bishops in Rome.
He now plans to write a letter to the Catholics of Ireland.

In a statement issued by the Vatican, Pope Benedict said he discussed the harrowing detail and cover-up of allegations against priests in the Dublin Archdiocesen as detailed in the inquiry report with Cardinal Sean Brady and Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin.
"The Holy Father was deeply disturbed and distressed by its contents," it said.

"He wishes once more to express his profound regret at the actions of some members of the clergy who have betrayed their solemn promises to God, as well as the trust placed in them by the victims and their families, and by society at large."

The Vatican said the Pontiff shared the outrage, betrayal and shame felt by so many of the faithful in Ireland, and that he was united with them in prayer at this difficult time in the life of the Church.

The statement added: "He assures all concerned that the Church will continue to follow this grave matter with the closest attention in order to understand better how these shameful events came to pass and how best to develop effective and secure strategies to prevent any recurrence."

The Murphy report detailed allegations against a sample 46 priests who served in Dublin between 1975 and 2004 and found that several bishops, including the Bishop of Limerick, Donal Murray, mishandled complaints against priests.

Bishop Murray has also been in Rome all week and is understood to be to be preparing to resign.
