I believe it is an incontrollable expression of emotions.
Since death is one of the most life shaping events for the people it touches (the living ones of course) then one does not know how to react to it and I think this is why many of us weep!
As you notice sometimes in extreme joyful situations people also cry.

What I find interesting is that in some polls people said they fear public speaking more than death!

well common human emotions. If people lost their closest-people, no matter friends, family, lover, husband/wife, kids etc.
If they are used to them, a sudden lost would cause people cry, as they think it's pity and they MISS them much.
The closer the relationship, the more sad they will be.

We human beings cry when we are happy, sad, afraid, crazy, depressed, hungry, in love, bullied, humiliated, feeling thankful, found, lost, hurt, etc...

Can animals cry?

What are the functions of crying?

How does crying serve us in our life?

What if human can not cry?

Is it a big loss to us?

In what way?         :)

You're bound to cry when a loved one dies arn't you ?

But perhaps our perceptions of death should be different.   In the west we have all these morose funerals and a Church service where everybo ...

I always attend funerals, sometimes cry but always feel sad because I will never see or be with that person in the their living form again.
I never, ever "view" the dead person in their coffin because the sight of them dead is the last picture of them that remains ingrained in my mind. Always want to remember them as when they were alive with a happy, smiling face. Dead people do not have a happy, smiling face, unfortunately.

You cry because that person has had touched your emotions, who played some part in your life.  They have left this world and you feel the loss.  It is human to cry.  Dogs howl and whimper when distressed, so it is not only humans who can grieve.
