NEW DELHI (CNN) -- India's Tata Motors Monday announced it would begin delivery of the Nano, billed as the world's "cheapest car", in July.

The four-door Nano is currently being built in "limited numbers" at a company plant in the north Indian hill state of Uttrakhand.

Tata Motors, however, aims to make 350,000 Nanos a year from 2010 at another unit elsewhere in the country, a company statement said.

"It is to the credit of the team at Tata Motors that a car once thought impossible by the world is now a reality. I hope it will provide safe, affordable, four-wheel transportation to families who till now have not been able to own a car. We are delighted in presenting the Tata Nano to India and the world," company chief Ratan Tata told a news conference in Mumbai to announce the "commercial launch" of the $2,000 car.

car insurance is the biggest financial...

insurance companies are so clever with their extreme careful investment from smaller economy cars insurers; these toy cars are just unsafe on the hiways & most of the car owners tend to speedin in/out of the city & that's a high chance of fatality accordin to the latest stats about the SMARTcar

*have you tried to get a quote from Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO) yet...you can fahgetaboutit  ;P

This car was basically designed for city conditions with slow moving traffic with lots of stops and starts. It is also an affordable alternative for less wealthy people in countries where public transport is not very convenient, and good for family travel in such cases. The company's objective was to produce a car that would be priced at within 100,000 Indian rupees (approx. 2500 USD), and they have managed that. This price is affordable for most Indians who currently drive two-wheelers.

The quality is actually pretty good for its price, and pretty well suited to Indian conditions. Here are some product specifications that I found:

insurance for small cars is limited because no matter what you do your ability to hurt OTHER people is limited.  Take a motorcycle for example, very risky for the rider but not a big threat to anyone else, hence low insurance.  look at an SUV, pretty safe for the driver and passenger but risky for everyone else hence expensive to insure.

The nano is awesome, exactly what india needs.  the overseas demand in the developed world is also surprising as people like the novelty of the small toy car.  I predict success for tata

always increase you liability (your broker would not ask or tell you that & of course your insurance will be much higher than your previous quote) to the max just in case you dont want to stay behind bars!  SUV is the most dangerous car to drive around if some minor thing appears in out of control (most SUV drivers swirl like crazy when a cat jumps out of nowhere) or panic breakin...you cant out run me with your fancy SUV (even my corolla  could smoke you in the dust...and wont damage my gas tank as well)
