Some historiographic works mention a Chinese city 'Zaiton', sometimes tentatively identified as Fuzhou; it could be Quanzhou though or Xiamen.

I believe it was present day Guangzhou. A couple of weeks ago one of our commercial TV stations showed a movie about  early Arab trade with Southern China. Very interesting, indeed.

1200 or 1300 and fish and chips. That is not really important and I am grateful for the lead.

What is fascinating is that both China and the Middle East were so forward thinking in their day, albeit a very cruel world, and that they both lost the forward momentum.

For China this phase happened about the time of the Yuan Dynasty or even a little bit before and stagnation set in in progressive thinking.  The academics suggest the period from 600 - 1100 A.D were the time of greatest discovery in China. For the Middle East this would also seem to coincide with the same period.  Certainly the demise of discovery would not seem to be influenced by the advent of Muhammad as that was in the 7th century.

Maybe it was the rise of the Mongols who used all of the modern technologies available, but maybe caused an unwitting suppression of new discovery. Another interesting thing is that both China and the Middle East made great discoveries but seem to have failed to follow them through to their maximum potential. A good example is gunpowder.

Cheers

The Arabs' best invention was Wassim, our top quality copier on Hamas' payroll.
