Airline considers charging a pound to use the toilets on their aircraft

BUDGET airline Ryanair is considering charging passengers to use the toilet on its flights.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary said the no-frills Irish carrier was looking at the possibility of charging £1 ($A2.20) to enter its on-board lavatories.

"One thing we have looked at in the past, and are looking at again, is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door, so that people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny," he said.

"I don't think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound."

Mr O'Leary defended the idea, saying the airline was always keen to find ways of raising "discretionary revenue" to keep airfares down and train stations often charged 20 pence ($A0.45) to use their public toilets.

Ryanair has a reputation for its high ancillary charges. Passengers have to pay extra for such things as check-in luggage, most card transactions and refreshments purchased on board its aircraft.

That's why I always say it doesn't pay to fly cheap and unreliable airlines. They make most money by heavily charging passengers for everything that is considered normal among real air carriers. Ryanair is notorious for bad service, unreliability and add-on fees.

Budget carrier passengers generally are an obnoxcious bunch.  They expect the same benefits and courtesy as if they were travelling first class.  I fly Air Asia out of south China sometimes.  For a little extra above the promotional price, passengers enjoy first boarding rights so they can sit at the front of the cramped cabin and proceed to feel important.  Then there's the luggage.  My thought is if you re so poor as to fly cheap, you shouldn't be allowed to clog up the checkin line and while boarding with half of your worldly possessions.  The savings from flying budget should allow you to make separate freight arrangement for your things.

It's simple, don't use cheap air carriers.
