Young Boy?

For reference

The art of translation has been around a long time, notably in China since the days when Buddhism was introduced into this country. Take the case of the "Hridaya Sutran" or 心经 or Heart Sutra. One finds in there a mix of translation and transliteration. In most cases, the method of translation is used and only in 5 instances is the transliteration route followed, like with the names of people, plants and vegetation unknown to China, concepts that cannot be accurately conveyed, and 2 more cases which I cannot recall. For example Prajnaparamita is transliterated as 般若波罗密多。However, there should not be too much of this as we would otherwise end up with a book of 咒, which would be totally incomprehensible. By the way, just look at the character 咒, doesn't it look like a face that is cursing away? So as far as possible, the rendering of one language into another should be one of translation by meaning, as far as possible. IMHO therefore, "spring chicken" shouldn't be too far out for 童子鸡.
