at around 2:00 on a busy commercial road in Guangzhou. Not the red light district or no-go-area, what you are talking about.

I am talking about something which is prevalent in most parts of the world especially in developing countries with large populations.  Which curiously enough started off in Italy.  No I am not trying to defend China, just the idea that you seem to think this only happens in Guangzhou.  Which shows that you really, 'don't know what you are talking about!'

Just Google:  motorcycle bag snatching

Here is just a small selection if you are too tired:

Let me introduce you to a new event that is held in Malaysia at the moment. It’s called the Month of Thievery ! Every time when festive season sets in, thievery ops are on high. Burglary, embezzlement, larceny, looting, robbery, mugging, trespassing, shoplifting, intrusion, fraud. You name it! Those are the act of thievery.
This month’s trend is bag snatching. It happens everywhere, day or night, regardless of whether it’s deserted or crowdy area. It still happens even if all precaution were taken to prevent such incident from happening. Snatchers are everywhere, waiting for the right moment to strike when they sees the opportunity.

Interesting

These are people who have a 'cradle to the grave' welfare system and little or no punishment for petty crime.  The U.K statistics are appalling with up to 10,000,000 crimes each of which only 6,000, 000 are reported.  There have been numerous deaths recently.

"The arrest came as the Metropolitan Police began a crackdown on knife and gun crime – including the greater use of stop and search powers – after a spate of fatalities in the capital.  Six people have died and another four have been wounded in such attacks in the past fortnight."  the indepenant.co.uk

You should consider yourself extremely lucky to live in such a safe environment.

My biggest wonder is how long U.K society will hold together in the long-term.  They have just had a period of literally unrestricted immigration and the indigenous population are getting more and more violent and thugish.  I am glad I don't live there anymore.  Especially at 80% tax on fuel!!

where I live in Australia the main problem comes from the aborigines, not just drunkeness, but crime and even murder. (a japanese tourist was murdered last year by drunken aboriginals) This may be a general problem with our society and still being unable to find a way to blend the aborigines into western society, but it's the main problem in Australia. Don't roam the streets alone at night.

Expatter,

Simply mind-boggling. People like to talk about the high crime rates in the US, but they are (1) terribly localized and (2) boosted by drug busts. In order to never deal with crime in Los Angeles, you need merely follow two rules: stay out of the ghettos and stay out of downtown after dark. Do that and you're fine, LAPD keeps the crime fairly well contained to those two areas. In the former it's mostly gang-related and the latter has to do with the fact that we haven't the gumption to just execute the homeless.

It is definition depends heavily on where people find themselves. When Iraqis brandished their dyed fingers in celebration at their first election, I suspect they had a "taste" of what they thought was freedom.... but that taste turned sour when they realized their "liberators" weren't planning on leaving.

Many African countries have also shown that same sense of elation when they vote for the first time, but often in the past those votes proved less powerful than guns. This has led some to the belief that might makes right.... which never makes freedom.

Freedom and democracy aren't universal terms, they are brands that people have to create for themselves. Freedom can't be given for it to have value or meaning, it has to be fired in the furnace of injustice. It has to come from the hearts and minds of those that seek it, and only there will it be defined.

freedom has to be fired in the furnace of injustice? So that's what China's been doing the last 50 years, creating freedom through so many failed policies and injustices of the past?
